We recently adopted a point of lay pullet quite by chance. I found her in the coop in between oiur RIR's looking like she's been there all her life, and hasn't left since. The farmer next door doesn't want her back and she doesn't want to go back - no surprise there. She then started laying and soon went broody. her 14 eggs hatched this am, and we are all beside ourselves with excitement....but we don't know what she is. She is all black including her feet and face(?). She hasn' t got the feathers on her legs like a Langshan, is not quite as round as an orpington. Has anyone got any ideas. To be quite honest she looks like the grim reaper of the fowl world.....but we love her.

I know, a photo would have been a good start, but you know how it goes. Where's the camera. The batteries are flat. No memory left on the card...........

Are there many types with black legs?

I think possibly a Black Sex Link. I had a BSL chick who I adored, she was tiny and her legs and feet were black. She got sick and didn't make it. I was so sad.
I believe they sometimes have a hint of rust in the breast feathers when mature.
She sounds like a good mamma. I hope she stays.
