Please help! Injured duck foot!

Personally I would rub Vaseline on the bandage where it will touch the foot and then wrap. It will need air though, so at night I would cage her on a small wire bottom cage and treat it again and let it sit without anything but God's air :) I would do this until it no longer looked raw then I would attempt to bandage while outside and check to see if she needs to be removed any longer for air treatment,if not I would leave wrapped for a few more days while still treating then I would let it be. That is what I would do.

Or you could see about a medical super glue after a thorough cleaning and let the foot air dry for a while in a cage then wrap and let outside for playtime.

Poor baby :(

That's awful! I'd wrap the wound in some sort of bandage and take her to the vet right away!

Well, I think the glue is helping. The bandage didn't stick, and she seems to be moving around a lot better. Actually, she ended up flying out of the small pen I made for her and she hung out with the chickens all day yesterday! I cleaned her foot again and put some more glue on the one raw spot and left it unwrapped thus time. I'll check it this morning to see how it is, but this is what it looked like last night... Please let me know if you think it's healing ok or if I should be concerned. She still holds it up a bit when standing, but she uses it to get around, limping though.

I failed to report that we got the snapper!! Strangely though, with six lines in the pond, we haven't gotten any more! Could there really have been just one old snapper in there?!?

That's a women's size 11 flip flop!!

Well now I'm completely sick. My son let the chickens and duck out this morning around 5:45 and then went up to the barn to take care of other things. I got up at 6am and saw the chickens were out, so I went to the window to check on Cocoa and didn't see her. I went out and looked everywhere. She is nowhere to be found!!!!

I don't even know what to think!!

Would she have tried to fly somewhere?? I checked the pond - which is at least a 1/4 mile away, separated by mostly woods. Would she have flown and not made it far and fallen into the trees?? I have never seen the ducks fly any length, so I have no idea what they are capable of. They are 2 1/2 months old.

Would something have come in that quickly after my son left to take her? If that happened, would the chickens not be all freaked out? I have no experience there either - I just know when something took another of my ducks at the pond that my ducks were completely freaked out and wouldn't go near that area again. My chickens are acting like nothing happened.

Feeling terribly sad to lose this duck that I've taken such special care of. :( :(

Cocoa has been found!! Alive!!

She ran away from home! I don't think she flew - she walked. She was halfway to the pond in the woods!! I checked her foot and it looked pretty good, so we decided to just take her to the pond and reunite her with her "siblings."

Well, that didn't go so well. As you can see from this video, it went from "oh, look, they are so happy!" to "oh, wait, they are trying to kill her!"

Are they really rejecting her? Will she never be welcome there again?? Or was it a mating thing?? If so, I've totally got my genders messed up, cuz I'm pretty sure that's the girl (or so we thought) trying to push her under. But I'm also pretty sure we have a duck and a drake there, and they were both pecking at her foot and pushing on her neck.

sigh. never a dull moment around here!!!

P.S. We did remove her from the pond and take her back up and locked her in the coop/run again. :(

You could try penning all of them together away from the pond. It looks like they were showing dominance by attempting to mate. If you take closer pictures of each for gender help, I am sure someone will be able to help. Sometimes the same genders will try to mate too. They did not seem to be aggressive, but my concern is Cocoa's foot in the water is not going to catch water as is did before. She should get used to swimming before putting her in the pond with the other ducks.

Great to hear she is well and healing.

Hi, what kind of glue did you use for your duck's foot?

Some of my ducks have pretty bad cracks in the bottoms of their feet (not exactly sure what's causing it, but I have a few ideas and will be making some changes around their place)… and I was hoping to find something that is water proof and does not require much bandaging. I want something convenient just to start out with; if it gets worse, I will probably buy some duck shoes (but I'm really trying to avoid this as I don't like to separate my ducks and I don't want to deprive all of them of water).

Whoa, this is going to turn into more questions:

1. Can you use epsom salt soaks on open (but not bleeding) wounds?
2. Would you all recommend vetercyn, or neosporin?

Maybe I should start a new thread… this might not be the right place after all. Thank you for your patience

Hi Tracy - sorry I just saw this! I used liquid bandage that is for people - got it at the drug store.

I'm too new of a duck mommy to know answers to your other questions - if you still have them, perhaps starting a new thread would be good. :)

Good luck!
