Please help me buy chickens....

I am having this same problem! I am new here too...and I WANT CHICKENS!! I have called the local feed stores, and they were very glad to tell me they are out for the year! ahhhh!

I love the help you are getting...I will be following this thread closely.

Too bad you don't live in Oregon, we could split the batch!

Thanks everyone! Please keep posting if you think of anything else.

I actually live in the Philadelphia suburbs. I'll have to see where the nearest feed store or tractor supply might be to me...I kinda think it's going to be somewhere around Lancaster Pa.
That's only about an hour drive so that's not too bad

Try posting on your local craigslist.com to see if anyone wants to split an order with you. Or you could order the 15 or w/e min order of barred rocks and reds, but then sell all the extras by putting an ad in the paper, selling them to a feedstore, posting online, ect.

Last winter I was in the same boat you are in, I only wanted three to keep. I ordered from Ideal and took advantage of their minimum $25 order. For $25 I got my three girls, plus 4 extra pullets. They sent my 7 along with 13 'packing peanuts' and I freaked out!

However, I listed 'chicks for sale' on Craigslist, and all 17 were sold in 3 days. I live in an extremely urban touristy area, and I was surprised at how many people have chickens here.

I listed the pullets as sexed, and the packing peanuts as gender unknown with a warning that they were quite possibly male. I made enough to cover the cost of my whole order. All the people I sold them to were happy to get them in small quantities and asked if I would be getting more next year.

Oh, and this was at the end of November. My chicks arrived on time and all were healthy.

I plan to order from them again, the only problem is that the breeds I want are sold out until who knows when.

Since your are in PA post in BST ( Buy Sale Trade)
Tons of PA folks that have been selling along time
3 of anything shouldn't be a problem -

My Pet Chicken - I received an order from them and everything went very well - the problem with a hatchery is Males added for warmth and paying the shipping, small box charge etc...

Breeders offer a better quality product for much less ---

What town are you in - I am on the PA boarder w/ Ohio I have cuckoo maran girls chicks 4 weeks ---
I know jody sells buff orps sometimes also - a very hardy breed --

Well...First I want to thank you all for posting replies. I googled "Feed Stores" in my area and wound up with one that is in Exton PA. That's actually the closest to me and since I really want to buy in person as opposed to online I think this is my best bet.
I Emailed the owner and he said that they DO have Rhode Island Red pullets but not Barred Rocks. He is expecting to have them in late June. SOOOOOO....I think I will get 2 RIR's from him and see if I have what it takes to care for these gals and then follow up with him in late June. I'll keep ya all posted
