ya need to feed him game conditioner, or game maintenance, mixed with the scratch,, plain ole scratch is like feeding him candy only,, it dont have much for protein or vitamins.
getting a couple red game hens will do him good,, and you

weird, i asked the place i went to today (City Farm in Orlando, FL) if they had chicken feed. they said sure what kind do i need. I said it's for a rooster and he's like oh ok you only need scratch then. and for $6 for 25 lbs i wasn't arguing. poo, now i gotta go back. sucks cause they don't have it on a shelf, it's in the warehouse and they take it too your car. GAH

brand or website would be cool.

also, just looked up more on american gamecocks, turns out they CAN be yellow legged too =P that was perplexing me for a while. Yellow Legged Hatch to be exact

how much do hens go for?

game hens of no real "blood line" go for around $25 here,, but that could be $5 where your at,, or $50.
and if you get from a feed store, its cheaper to get a 50 pound bag,, if you get the maintenance, or conditioner, you can mix the scratch in with it,, it'll make the more expensive feed last a little longer.

I'd try and look on Craig's list there in FL (is that your Orlando?) You might find someone willing to sell hens. I'd think you could get some pullets for $20... and as our resident hippie said, get some 50lb bags of feed, it's cheaper that way.

He's a beautiful bird...I didn't notice, does he have huge spurs like the ones on our friends from TX?

wow i didn't notice his rooster had spurs no i can't stop starring at them! WOW. no mine doesn't.

yes i'm in orlando. added my location and pic too OOOOOOOO AH! craigslist it is.

anyone have any cool nifty way of getting him into the coup/run when it's finished. he like to roost in a heavily planted area near my shed and i don't want to starle him too much. so skittish still.

I would just place the food and water in the pen and leave it there, with the door open.. And when you notice him inside eatting.. I would just close the door.. Ive done that to catch some abandoned birds before.. It took about a week though.

ya ,, that poor dude of mine had spurs over 4 inch's long,, poor guy couldnt even sit down (dumb@ woman owner) i'll take another pic of him tomorrow,, their WAY shorter now!! ,, if "baiting" him to the coop doesnt work,, try a fishnet,,hehe,, they work great at catching birds

i found a lady on craigslist how might be raising rhode island reds soon in east orlando.

please excuse my ignorance if i sound dumb in any of this! i'm new lol =P
