Actually I'd be surprised if 6 month old English Orpingtons would be laying yet. Mine don't typically start laying until they are 10-12 months old.

The pointed saddle and neck feathers of cockerels versus the rounded ones on hens is the best way. And if they are all the same age and same breed, it's been my experience that the combs on the cockerel chicks start growing faster (i.e., become visible sooner) than on the pullet chicks.
