Does your dog bark or even take a nip of people. Does your cat hiss and spit and sometimes take a bat at you with his claws out? Will your nice horse sometimes take a nip or accidently step on your toes? you have chickens, have you never been pecked or have a roo spur You? just about any animal that you truely interact with have the potential to hurt you. If you can't work out your differences with the animal you get rid of it! Who writes about the animalls that give you no problems. Yes my geese will bite, usually just a warning nip, but some times they are really mad. Pick up a gosling and mistreat it enough that he makes a distress call and every goose that hears it is going to be on your case! I have owned 52 adult geese that I can remember over the years but have only disposed of one that couldn't seem to learn that I was the boss. On a board like this many of the people are new to geese or only thinking about geese, should we lie and tell them that geese can never cause any problems? I try to be truthfull geese are bigger than chickens and usually aren't as afraid of humans if you know a few simple rules going in you can avoid many proplems with geese. Geese will protect territory they consider to be theirs. Geese will protect their nests and their young, Most geese can be backed down if you show no fear. Never turn your back on an angry goose he will take it as a sign that you are afraid and take advanage of it to give you the beating you deserve. Geese and young children are a bad combo the goose isn't impressed by their size while the child may be and may be afraid which is bad.
Mostly I keep geese just to watch them they are intelligent, curious and often playfull birds. They have a rich family life that most poultry lack. Mostly they are self reliant and require minimum care. I wouldn't keep a single goose since the flock is an very important part of their life. I hope I have explained the first oart of your post. now for the rest:
most geese will bite under some conditions, Very few are truly mean.
Geese need fresh water just like most animals to drink. A pool is not required but they love to have one,
Most will bunk with chickens as long as the chickens know they are the boss of the house, stick to their roosts at night and are provided nest boxes that are too small for the geese to use. Some times it just doesn't work out. ~gd
