Last night I noticed my black copper Marans pullet had a small lump on her head. I thought maybe she got stung by a yellow jacket when she was free ranging, but now I think she has some sort of infection. This morning I washed it because it look like she had a lot of feather shaft shedding around the area. I don’t know if this is some sort of infection, but it looks like that to me. Please if anybody out there knows what this is and can tell me what to do it would be greatly appreciated! Here are a few photos.I don’t know if it could be related, but about a month and a half ago I had to take her to the vet because she had an eye infection.

I would apply BLU-kote on the area It’s a wonderful anti-fungal, antibiotic spray that will keep her flock mates from pecking at it. Before hand, wash it off well and/or spray with Vetericyn to clean the area well.....good luck with her!!! Keep us posted if it worsens or if you have any more concerns. ❤️

Thank you for your reply! I gave her a bath and looked at her feathers and it appears that she has lots of feather shaft dander. I don’t think it looks normal because it looks like she has lots of broken off feathers or something. I am just wondering if she could have some type of vitamin deficiency since she is the runt of the flock and also blind in 1 eye, her pupil in the other lot eye looks kind of odd also, she and is constantly chased away from the food. Mimi is only about half the size of all the others that are the same age as her, even though they are different breeds they should all weigh about the same.

I wish that more of the members would reply, I really don’t feel like taking her to the vet again if there is a simple solution. Thanks in advance to anyone that replies! I need your help!

What are you feeding your flock?
I am feeding them organic starter and also lots of treats and then they free range for about four hours a day, so they are getting lots of fruits and veggies from my garden and also bugs! The treats I give them are sunflower seeds, meal worms, corn, watermelon, sometimes bread or pasta or rice. All the others are super healthy looking and big! I just weighed Mimi and she only weighs 3 pounds at 19 weeks old. She just has so many problems and now this huge bump on her head! It is like her feathers are not coming in right or something because of all the weird feather shafts. I just don’t know what to do! Maybe I will start giving her 1/4 a centrum every day. What ever is making her feathers shafts stick on her feathers, I just think it might be some sort of deficiency. I think I give them too many treats and they don’t eat enough of their starter. They are super picky!

The pictures of her lesion seems to be out of focus in most of the pics, although the comb is in focus. Without seeing it clearer, I would wonder if it could be a feather cyst (ingrown feathers) or possibly a tumor. I really have no experience with either of those. Tumors can be common in chickens with some viruses. Here is some reading about ingrown feather cysts:

Thank you so much! I was thinking it was some sort of feather cyst because of the way her feathers shafts seem to not be shedding, but they are just stuck on her feathers and I have to scrape them off! Maybe I will end up having to take her to the vet again because my Vet is at VCA Hospital’s and she is a aviary specialist. I will try to clean it and put peroxide on it for a couple of days to see if that helps, before bringing her to the vet, because it cost me a fortune every time! It reminds me of some kind a pimple.
