PLEASE HELP! My Roo In Trouble

We got the birds from McMurray Hatchery and did pay to have a extra vaccine? I will search that description. I have him in the pen, but in a seperate cage.

It sounds like heat stoke to me, I almost lost all my chicks yesterday because of this KY heat. I gave my chicks sugar water and put them in the AC. The next they all where back to normal.

I forgot to add, we hatched 2 new chicks 3 days ago, I tried to sneak them under the broody hen at night as others here suggested. The next morning they looked fine, but then yesterday we came home from work and found 1 dead, and no clue where the other chick went? Could roo possibly ate him? Could the new day old chicks do this?

I doubt the roo would eat him without a trace left over. I also doubt the chicks could have caused something this severe that fast. Might be several things going on here.

i would start him on an antibiotic as soon as possible, and chicks often die for what seems like no reason at all and i do not think he ate the chick and a single dead wasp probably will not be deadly to him considering the chemicals they use on the corn products we feed them ..... im sorry that you are having to deal with this

So I went out late tonight to check up on him. He seem to be in the same condition, maybe a bit better. I only have sugar so gave him some sugar water earlier. Bad thing is we are gone tomorrow for most the day so I can try and make him drink in the morning, but he is on his own till I get back. :-( Hope to stop by TCL with some medicine, maybe try some Vit. E?

He was my buddy out of the pack, so will really miss him if he does not make the night. :-(

Thinking all good thoughts, Russ! I hope he pulls through. (I had a hen that I was SURE was dying at the beginning of July. She was in BAD shape. Nuclear green poo is what I'll remember. NO clue what her problem was but she is still with me today!!!!)

Try to get him to drink as much as possible, and set a dish of water in a manner which he can't flail against it and spill it (tough, I know).

If you can pick up some baby food, protein powder, kitty food, Gatorade, yogurt... even crush a vitamin into powder and mix a little into it to make a sort of semi-appealing, liquid-filled mushy option, he might go for it while you're away.

They're surprisingly resilient! Hope he pulls through.

Hi All,

Ok first I want to say thank to all of you who helped me through my rooster ordeal.

Just to let you all know for future reference a bit about my discovery on Heat Stroke with Chickens.

So my rooster was fine in the morning, and when I returned home from work (5pm) he was in coop, limp, weak, and just disoriented. Looked to me like he was on the edge of death. Neck wobbling all over, could not stand. Now mind you the temp outside was close to 100 that day and dummy me I did not give them fresh water that morning although they had plenty but from the previous day.

I put rooster in a seperate pen, made sure he had plenty of breeze and shade, and feed (almost had to force) him sugar water. He was in rough shape all night. I woke up the next morning to check on what I thought would be a dead roo, and he was standing, and eager as hell to get out of that tiny cage he was stuck in. We let him out and he was good as new, just like this never happened.

So if your little buddy has instant symptoms like this and it was a hot day, please consider this cause. Thanks to my fellow KY who brought this to my attention.

Russ
