*sigh*

So today, I saw that my rooster's tongue came out of its mouth. I noticed a few days ago that its base was swollen and his tongue looked very, very pale. The tongue came out and there was nothing inside his mouth. He was acting completely normal and he could make all sorts of sounds. It seemed like nothing happened. He was even eating completely normally.

There were no signs of pain or shock, but I'm still worried. His entire tongue was just detached from his mouth.

Is it serious?

Um, his tongue is gone completely?

What else is in the pen with him?

What all is in the pen?

You didn't think anything a few days ago being swollen to take action ?

This can happen sometimes when a chicken gets a long hair or piece of string wrapped around the tongue cutting of the circulation, and it can eventually fall off. We have seen a few threads on here or partial tongue amputation. That would present a problem eating and drinking. I would cage the rooster for a few days to make sure that he is able to get enough to eat and drink. Some things to try are wetting him chicken feed, offering some chopped egg, and also place regular dry feed out for him to try and eat. Hopefully he can survive.

His tongue is gone completely. We had called a vet when his tongue was swollen and we had given him antibiotics and a couple other medicines, on recommendation by the vet. He doesn't live in a pen, he lives in a section of our house itself, alone. We play with him and feed him time to time.

It was his tongue, because I had checked with a flashlight inside his mouth.

He can crow, but he's having some problems eating. The vet said he'll have a speedy recovery at this rate.

I'll post a picture of his mouth in a second.
