Please help, RIR, completely baffled, Im afraid im going to lose her..

Your not noticing any other symptoms besides not eating? How is her poop this morning? To oil up the vent put on a surgical glove and either use vaseline or olive oil and just go right inside and around the outside of her vent. Is it swollen and red around the vent area? And not hot water just nice and warm. And you said she seems in pain when you picked her up? Could she have something down into the intestines that is causing the problem? Thats why I asked about her poop.

This seems reminiscent of a bird I lost to peritonitis.

She broke an egg internally and no infection showed up, but she was wincy, ate only when she was desperate, and lost weight, stared, wasn't very active. Moving hurt.

The only thing I would do, now knowing what the cause was through post-mortem, would be to administer high doses of Penicillin. It's supposedly best for this sort of internal infection, and I can't think of anything else short of a hysterectomy and abdominal clean-out that could possibly help.

It does sound as though she's got infection in there, and I wish you the best of luck.

One last question- could she have fallen? This also sounds like pelvis fracture some- behaviorally the lack of activity and malaise sound like a possible internal injury.

What we do right before slaughtering broilers, we mix scratch or birdseed with vegetable shortening and feed them that. She may like it and it will prevent her from losing fat too quickly.

I have my own RIR and love her a lot. Hope Helen gets better and please keep me updated!

The physical she got did not reveal fractures or a broken egg. I will try the vent oil up.
Her faeces did not show parasites.
Since she has not been eating much the droppins are very small. Liquidy but this morning it had a lot white in it.
Clues?

Didn't I read somewhere that changing what we feed them can cause upset stomach for a short while?...and if you are changing what she eats everyday her stomach is not getting a chance to catch up???....not saying this is how it started but is not helping?....and have a dumb question....can a chicken poop if she is eggbound?

Maybe so Jim from Cincinnati, I know it is with dogs but not sure about chickens maybe if it was drastically diff. I have never had an egg bound hen before.
