Hi there, I got a batch of MPC hatchery chicks on Monday. I gave them to my broody silkie Monday night and everything has been great. I have them in a pen inside the coop but they can get out under the nest boxes. my other 3 chickens were out free ranging and the momma silkie decided it was time to take the babies to the run. All but 4 chicks made it down the run, 3 were standing at the top chirping and 1 of the 2 d'uccles was laying on its side in the pen. I took her out and brought her inside. She falls asleep every 5 seconds, and instantly falls asleep if you pick her up.I put some probiotics in the water and she is drinking, I made her some scrambled eggs but when I try to feed her she just falls asleep in my hand, I have not seen her eat. She can stand and is currently standing asleep in the plate of eggs but she is not sturdy, if I try to pet her she tips over. I will post a pic, her stance is definitely wide but I have not seen her walk to see if she has spraddle leg. She puts her wing out to balance when I pet her. Not sure what is wrong. Of course this is my daughters favorite chick so we are praying she makes it. All the other chicks seem healthy and happily running around in the run with their adoptive momma.

I just tried taping her legs and she could not stand at all. And when I put her back she just kept falling over, she is having a hard time standing at all now. once she falls she cannot get back up on her own

Sounds odd, but is she warm enough? When cold, the young poultry tend to keep their heads super close to their body and do sleep quite a bit.

Is her backside (without feathers) the same shade as the rest of her exposed skin? Turning blue or purple or swollen could indicate a birth infection.

Does she "feel" the same as siblings structurally? Like her hips?

I had a batch of chickens from TSC that has had a LOT of health problems. It included birth infection. (Infection when the belly button gets infected/doesn't heal right. There's a technical name for it, but I don't remember it. Someone else will.) Because of all the very early health challenges with this group, they were on antibiotics almost from adoption day. The little one with the worst belly infection didn't make it. Her backside turned blue/purple (and swelled) and she had a wide stance. She loved to be picked up and did snuggle down and sleep. Overall, she failed to thrive as her siblings grew well. She did move to chicken heaven about a month after I adopted her.

This doesn't mean that your little one has an infection! Just keep an eye out for discoloration, swelling, failure to thrive, and be aware of temps.

Yes Tractor Supply sells it.

I think she is weak and needs some energy so she can eat and grow.
If she doesn't eat she isn't going to survive.
I think the Nutri-Drench will give her a pick me up-if it isn't too late-that she needs in order to get up and eat herself.

I would also pick up some Corid too.

Yes, TSC has/carries Nutri-Drench. Check the expiration date!

IF she has a birth infection, it's very unlikely that you can save her. My gal lasted almost a month because she was on antibiotics from a few days old. My vet didn't even want to do that - said it wasn't worth the trouble - they all die anyway.

To me, she looks and acts cold.

To me, it's difficult to tell her if her bum or belly are swollen. You'd have to compare her to her siblings.

To me, it's near impossible to tell if her bum has any discoloration or has any "warmth" to it. And I am not talking about the poop that comes out! Which, btw, looked normal for my gal.
