Hi there, Please help, 2 of my RIR have identical red patches about the size of a quarter on their backs where the pin feathers from the wings attach. We have no rooster. This isn't an injury. Their feathers are gone in that patch. It's red like their combs. It's kind of raised and round. Any ideas? I thought about using polysporin or fungal cream? They do not want me to touch it...Does anyone have an idea what this is?
Thank you so much for your help.

Some birds molt that way Here is a BYC thread on the topic. Picture about 1/2 way down looks just like your description except that the hen has major loss on the back as well

Our chickens molt differently. Some you hardly know they are molting, some get big loss on the back, sometimes with the top of the wing as you describe. One hen molts to almost no feathers. If the roosters are causing harm to the skin on a molting hen I separate them until feathers have grown back. Otherwise I just wait until they are restored with new feathers to their old selves.

Yep that looks like molting for sure. I am not sure why some molting chickens get red skin and others do not. Sun exposure? This poster thinks so "Firstly, don't panic too much! Red skin isn't sun burn it is just a reaction to being exposed to light and air and is not actually sore."https://lifestyleblock.co.nz/forum/...feathers-and-growing-only-fluff-then-red-skin I have some that get the red skin and some don't.

Thanks so much for the response. I feel better! It's been going on for many months, so a slow molt then.
