Please help! What am I doing wrong? (warning: semi-graphic photo)

Ok...I got home and my poor husband who is home sick today looked like a tired chicken mommy. The baby that was zipping is out and resting. No other ppips yet. The membrane on the chicks shell was thick too. Will update in a bit with more info

Thanlks everyone!!

At least one has made it! I would like to see pics of the shell if it shows anything!

Took my husband out to dinner...I figured I at least owed him beer and dinner for all I've put him through today!!

Thank you all for your support--it really means so much right now. Keep the fingers crossed for more luck!

With the chick that hatched around 7pm that makes the official live count 2. There werent any other pips so I reached in and snuck out the shell. What do you think? Humidity is holding steady at 65%

Thank god the little one made it. Sending good vibes your way for more healthy chicks.

I really hope this problem ends with this hatch. What an awful thing to have happen twice.

Thanks Cluck! Anymore babies for you?

Sorry for your loss. I never hatch any thing myself before, but had some hatches by mother hens in the remote past. Just finished making a homemade incubator, going to have eggs in a few weeks for 1st hatch. As a physician I just dont think bacterial infection is the main culprit here. In nature, mother hens dont really sterilize her nests. Sometimes you hear success stories where someone thought she had lost her hen when later discovers the mother hen coming home with several chicks she incubated in the dirty corner somewhere in the back. There are numerous types of bacteria in the dirt as we know. The egg shell is covered by an antimicrobial membrane for this very reason. If the chick was infected inside the egg, then I would expect it does not has any strength to pip in the first place. The time of pipping to the time of death just seems too quick for an infection to take place, unless the chick is hemorrhaging and gets bacteremia (bacteria in the blood stream) which I dont think is in this case. Humidity and drowning sounds more reasonable here, but I am not an expert. I wish we have a Vet in this forum to shed some light in this, so you or someone else dont have to go through this again in the future. Best of luck.

Yeay for the baby!!!

I will also answer the question Could 70% humidity kill an actively zipping chick? with a big YES! I had 1 in my last hatch start zipping then just stop. 12 hours later everyone else was out so I reached in to help and it had drown. The humidity inside the egg is not 70%, that's the air after they open the egg. Any moisture left on the chick needs to dry out. If your humidity is too high it can't dry out as quickly and even a little bit of moisture can cause it to drown. It's sort of a crapshoot. My first few hatches were around 72-75% humidity and they did fine. Then I tried dry incubation and switched to 68% for hatch and I had one drown. Go figure! You need to find a method that works best for you and stick with it.

Good luck with the rest!

Thank you all for your insight.

Chickenfarmer: Thank you. This makes me feel so much better about the potential of a bacterial infection. I was planning to disinfect my entire family room where the incubator is after this hatch.

Sheesh--who would have thought hatching chicks was so hard?? I think humidity has to be the most controversial topic on this board--there doesn't seem to be a right or wrong answer and people are all over the place with what works best for them. Obviously whatever I'm doing isnt working for me.

So far none of the other eggs have pipped but I am keeping my fingers crossed I didn't accidentally kill those too.

Urgh...I feel so drained.

On the bright side, the 2 live babies are doing great!!

I'll post pics of them once I pull them out of the incubator tomorrow.

Both of my Marans hatches were the same way. Membrane really thick. I've done 2 Marans hatches and only got 3 chicks (of which one had to be culled could not spradle leg fixed) this was out of 24 eggs. Once my two girls start laying I will test their eggs. That wont be for a while I have one 13 wks and one 6 wks. I dont think for now I will be hatch any shipped Maran eggs till I get it right, due to the expence. and only getting 2 chicks for 65 dollars plus shipping on one set.
