Hello I am a newbie ...actually today is my first day with chickens. So i got home with my EE she is 9 mths-ish and i noticed her eye has a white film over it. i called the fella i bought her from and he said that she may have a cold in her eye. What do you all think? And What can i do for her? even though i just bought her today i already love her. I dont want to trade her she for another she is very tame. is that normal for her to have a cold in her eye and be very tame? should i keep her away from the other chickens? i dont know what to do please help this first timer:(!!! Some first day huh

thanks wrejme04

chickens have an inner eyelid like cats do. you may be seeing that. If youre sure its something in the eye then
It also may be an eye infection. I dont know what an "eye cold" is and maybe someone here would know what that is, but in the absence of sneezing or any sort of discharge, it could be a virus or an infection. They can sometimes get pecked or maybe hit on a cage.
you may want to put some terramycin eye ointment in it if you can get some (they sell it on the poultry sites or on ebay) but if its filmy and swollen
it could be eye mareks. There isnt much to do about that but to wait and see.
Are these birds vaccinated for mareks? how old are they?
I personally use antibiotics and having been through some eye mareks and more recently an eye infection that caused a hen to lose her eye, I would get some terramycin into it and/or start some antibiotics on the bird...some of the type you put in the water that you can get at the feed store is a start....separate it from the other birds in a box.....and post a picture here.
Im sure that if you post a picture, someone here will know what it is.
If the guy who sold you these birds is willing to replace her ...well, youre already attached.
Chickens are hardy animals but they also die...so be prepared....but it could also be nothing.

good luck...

Thank you. I am going to the store now. I will try to get a picture of it up here. He said that they all have had Vacs. I know it sounds silly that i'm already attached but she is so sweet. Well thanks again!!!! i hope this takes care of it.

Hey thanks again! I took your advice and she is doing much better I put her back in the coop with our other Ladies this morning.

Thanks again!!!!
