Please help with our duck house!!

I think I was having analysis paralysis! I went out there and was totally stumped on what to do. I have ideas in my head and no way to get them out! Thank you everyone so much for the info and ideas. I really appreciate it... my birds do too!!

Hi,
Your duck would like grass, BUT, they will eat it all and then you will be left with a mud hole. So pea gravel might be better. Also they can pick through it for grit they need for their crop. If you can get a piece of Astro turf type material to put on the concrete it will be better for their feet.

I highly recommend keeping the pool located where they can only get in it when supervised. Otherwise you will have a poop filled open cesspit. They will jump in and out all day and try to fill it with dirt. I think ducks want to be worm farmers.

Some ducks like toys like a wiffle-ball or other small lite toys.

They will need a place in the shade.

You may want to read up on the "Deep Litter" method for the bedding material.
I have had great success with no smell or flies. I change it twice a year and the old litter goes in to my compost pile. It breaks down fast after wetting it and I get lovely earthworms too.

We're new to ALL of this and starting with composting too. My husband will love to hear about the worms! Our compost is really starting to break down. I love to hear about the less stink... and my kids will love to hear about less work sounds like I need to look into this deep litter thing!

Their area has shade/sun... depending on where they'll like to bask for the day

Deep litter will probably not work too well if it's on top of concrete.
It would need to have ground underneath in order to decompose.
I suppose you could deep litter method in that exposed ground area you have there but I think it would just be more of a mess than what you would like.

Well... they're far enough away I wont be able to smell them too much... and it won't hurt the kids to do chores
