I noticed the pip in the egg this morning at about 8 a.m. but since then there has been no progress at all and we still have not heard a single peep. at what point should I begin to assist or does it sound like the chick has already died? It's now day 22 as of 3 p.m. today

Chicks can take a whole 24 hours after pip to actually hatch. After a chick pips, keep an eye on the membrane. If it remains white that's a good sign. If it turns a yellowish/brown and gummy, it needs to be grabbed out and moistened and inspected. I play videos of chicks chirping (from youtube) by the bator (periodically) during hatch and it keeps them motivated and lets me know they are still kicking it in there. I wouldn't get too anxious until it hits 18 hours, then I would probably investigate.
