Some of our hens have a runny nose, and the discharge has a very fowl odor...any ideas??? Oh and the snot is clear, Thanks for the help

yes it is coryza or roup
and is not cureable as such
the chickens will get to where they live with it
BUT they then give off a lot of germs with the disease germs in them to the other chickens

but you can give them a strong antibiotic and go to Smith poultry supply to get it

well for the offensive smell and head respiratory disease here is what to do first

the best thing would be to buy some
VETRX
USING VETRX on the chickens as such

you would put the vetrx all over the head and in the eyes
and rub it in daily
also under the wings
and give 1/2 tsp down the throat

FOR you TO get this Vetrx

call Smiths Poultry supplies
tell them what they have and get a strong antibiotic or which ever medication they say for coryza
you need a strong antibiotic as it is coryza or roup
tell them this:

HERE IS THEIR INFROMATION

then once a week for life

All the while after mdicating the birds use
do not use ACV with medication

they should have this at least 3-5 days a week
then three days aweek after they are over coccidiosis
the vit's are neccessary to clean up the damaged gut problem
take all the electrolytes out of the water

ALSO AFTER THE MEDICATION IS DONE FEED THIS AGAIN as time listed

then feed wet mash probiotic

I agree - that fetid smell is a sign of coryza. That's one of the very few respiratory illnesses that has a tell-tale sign.

Sulmet is labeled for coryza. Not many antibiotics are. I would use the Sulmet in their water no less than 5 days, 7 is my recommendation. Then I would do all of Glenda's recommendations to help the healing of the birds.

VetRx, if you can't find it at the feedstore for chickens, is often in their rabbit section. All of the VetRx's are basically the same and good for chicken use. If you can't find that, call your local big petstores for Marshal Pet Petter Rabbit Rx. It's the same thing. Use to swab as Glenda recommended. IT facilitates breathing and air-flow is so very important to treating any respiratory illness. A bird that can't breathe won't eat; a bird that won't eat will die. So help them breathe.

I personally feel that the VetRx also helps a little with inflammation, just as Vicks does for humans. (Do not substitute vicks.)

You can use Yogurt with Sulmet - it's fine. Feed the yogurt, the Sulmet is in the water. Give the probiotics (yogurt mash etc) daily during medication and then every other day 2 weeks afterwards at least.

If you use sulmet in the water, ,do use acv at the same time - use it in the 2 week followup treatment period after the meds are done.

The quicker you treat, the better off you are.

By the way, disinfect all waterers and feeders daily to keep from them reinfecting one another. Handle and feed your sick chickens last after your chores - then clean your clothes, or wear one smock or big shirt (and gloves) when you handle them only - hang it in their area to put back on when it's their time.

Let us know please how they're doing.

Utohhh

I gave them the vitimans in their water and they were drinking a lot, it appeared they were spiting up??? is this noraml! Otherwise they took to the water great!!

Coryza results in a great deal of mucus in their throats. I would suspect that's why. The mucus makes it more difficult for them to drink.

Did you put vitamins or the Sulmet in their water? I'm assuming the sulmet - good that they drank it.

The problem is that usually you'd use apple cider vinegar in their water (1 teaspoon/gallon of water) BUT you're medicating in the water. So medication is more important. HOpefully it will decrease the mucus over the next 2 days and then will continue to work for the rest of the 7 day period.

Definitely be sure to give them yogurt, too - as all that mucus is going into their gut and that, along with the antibiotics, will wipe out good bacteria. You certainly don't want diarrhea on top of coryza. It would just be too much for them.

I'm glad they're drinking that water - that's a great start!

I got the VETRX and some powdered vitaman electrolyte suppliment. Was I suppose to get something else? How often should I give the yogurt combo and no RCV untill i give them just water? They seem to be responding very well the well very active, and now snezzing like they are trying to get it out. Our rooster and 1 hen where the worst and are MUCH better today! How often should I do the vetrx? Thanks for all the help

You can try with the VetRx - daily works best. I like before night so I know they're really breathing well. For the very congested ones, twice a day to help their breathing. It only takes a tiny bit of the stuff once you mix it with the very warm water.

What were you using again in the water before?

I'm very glad to hear they're all doing better.
