We are trying to find the right kind of bird for our area. We have a 10 by 4 inclosure with plants, grass, and hiding areas. We cannot have chickens in our area or very loud birds. We have tried button quail and bobwhite quail, both pretty much unsuccessfully. Please give suggestions for good bird breeds. BTW it can get as low as 15 degrees at night here, so the birds must be cold tolerant.

You might consider some of the cold hardy dove species.

Yes I have always been interested in doves and homing pigeons...do you have any personal experience with any species of them? Also, our inclosure doesn't really have a high top, so very flighty birds may not have much room to fly...maybe we could clip the wings? I guess that really isn't fair though...any suggestions?

Some years ago when I lived in northern California I raised some Ring Necked Turtle Doves and I've raised some baby Zebra Doves that had fallen from nests to adulthood out here in Hawaii, but that is the extent of my experience with them. I'm thinking that my doves were kept in smaller cages than your enclosure; I never clipped their wings, and they did just fine. I would suggest posting on our Dove section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/52/pigeons-and-doves and taking advantage of our dove experts there.)

Thank you all so much! You guys actually inspired me to check out homing pigeons, which I've always loved. I think I will start off with one that has a bad wing and can't fly, just to get the feel for how messy and loud they are so I can decide whether or not to get some that can really fly. Once again, thank you all so much for your help and time!
