I have never known a chicken that wouldn't eat maggots!

You need to make sure your chickens are not wasting their feed on the ground. I'll bet if you fed your chickens less feed, they would figure out that maggots are tasty to chickens.
 
Most chickens would relish them as a treat. I doubt they would hurt the chickens at all if they did eat them. Chickens tend to not eat things that are dangerous, this is a for the most part thing. On occasion chickens will peck items not good for them but this usually occurs when they don't have anything else to eat.

If you are having problems with wild birds getting into the run, you may need to put a cover on it or find a way to limit their access to the feed. There is a plan on this site (don't remember where) for an automatic feeder that the birds step on a treadle to be able to access the feed. A device such as this will keep lighter weight birds from being able to get to the feed and so limit wasted feed.
