hello,
I’ve just found one of my hens bleeding from her side, one of the other hens was pecking into her side as they walked away when I came rushing out. I’ve caught her and put her in a cat carrier to assess the situation but I’ve just had my sons school call to pick him up as he’s sick. So I’m typing this in hopes someone will tell me what supplies I may need to treat a wound. As I said I haven’t been able to fully look at it yet but want to pick up something while I’m out. And then might be a vet trip depending on how bad it is.
Will post pics as soon as I get home.

Vetricyn rinse to get the dirt out of the wound (Should be at your local farm store. If you can't find it, make a saline rinse with 1 tsp salt and a quart of water) triple antibiotic ointment (no painkiller) to keep the wound moist, and Blu-Kote, which should also be available at your local farm store to seal the wound and keep dirt out. (It's hard to bandage a chicken.)

Good luck.

Thanks so much, I’ve rushed back home and got my son to help me take some photos. This is what we found.

That doesn't look too bad at all. Clip the feathers around the wound to remove a source of contaminants, and isolate for a while. Any idea why your hens were pecking at her?

I’m so new to this I full cried my eyes out I don’t want to hurt her. She’s the last on the pecking order, they bully her a little bit so I’m not sure if this has happened from the other hens or she’s hurt herself on something.

What are you feeding, how much space do they have, how many do you have, and how old are they? Any of those factors can have an effect on how they treat each other.

Here's hoping it was just a random accident.

Ok so further inspection it seems like something else is going on here. Her skin is very hard and dry in a big lump all around this area

I would also recommend putting honey over the wound. It helps heal the wouND and prevents infection. It works really well lon our birds. We're they outside free rangING or inside the coop? It could be a puncture wound from a hawk/avian predator. We treated a chicken with a similar injury on her shoulders due to being picked up and dropped by a hawk.

They free range on 5 acres but stick close to their coop mostly. I only have 4 hens, and they eat layer food as well as what ever bugs and things they eat and some scratch mix as a treat.
