Could he have gotten into a poison (rat poison, insecticide, weed killer, automotive spill) or a poisonous plant? If he does not make it, I would keep his body cool in a plastic bag, and contact the state vet for a necropsy. Each state sets different prices, but call and ask. Here is a list of all state vets:

He didn’t make it. He was also not near any of those things

Sorry for your loss. Well, you really should get a necropsy on him for an unkown sudden illness. In Ohio, it is only $23 for a backyard chicken.
