This is the first time I’ve ever hatched eggs. I currently have 4 Cayuga duck eggs in my incubator and it’s day 28. 2 out of 4 eggs have externally pipped on the small end of the egg, and the other 2 have done nothing yet. One of them looks like it hit a vein as there is a dark ring around where it pipped, but it’s still alive. It has been this way for at least 36 hours now with no progress. My concern is that I have no idea what my humidity is (as I have nothing to measure it), but I have plenty of water in there and a wet sponge. It looks like the outer membrane is shrinking away from the shell now. I’m not sure if I should help or not. I tried putting a little coconut oil on the membrane, but should I do something else? I don’t want this little one to die.

I would start to help it out. If it starts to bleed you need to stop!

I tried putting a tiny hole in the air cell end of the egg and when I peeled away a little of the shell and membrane there was blood, so I stopped. I held a dry paper towel on it for a few seconds. It was peeping in there, so I know it’s still alive. I’ll put it back in for a while and see what happens. I hope that I didn’t hurt it.

I don’t think you did! Yes, I would leave it in your incubator for now! Did you try just taking some of the shell off were he has peeped? Not the membrane!

Yes, there’s a little of the shell gone from there, and just a tiny opening in the membrane. I can’t tell what part of its body is there though. This is so stressful. I just hope it’s not shrink wrapped or something and can’t get out on it’s own.

Do you see it’s bill?
