I have an older hen and she’s been very lethargic the past week. I’ve given her epsom salt baths for two days now and she’s walking around for a little bit. I’m so stuck on if she has WATER BELLY or EGG-BOUND.. she’s showing all symptoms of egg bound except it says they can barely survive 24-48 hours.? I’ll attach an image of her bottom. Please give me answers, I’ve also just read it could be vent gleet.

When was her last egg?

I'd give her 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 now, then once daily for a week.

See that she's eating/drinking. Check her for lice/mites.

It sounds like she may be having problems laying an egg or lash material, hopefully she'll be able to expel something soon.

Her last egg would have been around a week ago. She eats and drinks perfectly okay, we’ve been giving her soft weetabix and scrambled eggs mixed with vitamin water.

Everything I’ve read is if she had water belly she’d have laboured breathing and blue comb because of the lack of oxygen. However, her vocals are completely fine, she can still cluck and sing out when something frightens her.

Can a chicken that is egg-bound last longer than a couple days?
And what is lash material?

Her comb is still thick and red it’s just drooping over..

She needs her regular chicken feed. It's good, balanced nutrition. If she won't eat it dry, try wetting it into a mash or gruel consistency, a lot of chickens love that and it will help hydrate her. Be sure to supply grit as well, and plain water as an option if you are putting supplements in her water.

We’ve been mixing soaked seed into the mixes of foods we’ve been giving her. She always has access to clean water and ect. She just doesn’t eat solid food even when we soak the seed, it just seems like she can’t peck it up

Can you feed her crumble instead of seeds, like a grower formula or all-flock, are either of those available in your area?
We do have that available in our area. But she’s been eating and drinking really good now, even the seed but it still has to be soaked and soft.

Do you think if it was water belly she wouldn’t be eating/drinking? I’ve read they can but they don’t consume a lot of it, but my hen has been eating and drinking quite a bit.

She doesn’t have laboured breathing or anything, no purple or blue comb or waddles.. Her energy levels are coming back but she is still laying around and bloated..

It can be hard to tell right away if she has trouble laying an egg or lash material, or if she is suffering from water belly. They may not always have labored breathing or a blue comb at first. I have done necropsies on hens who had water belly from various causes. I would just try the calcium and observe her. Try getting her to eat and drink.

Is she having a hard time picking up food?

She just can’t pick up solid seed and pallet, she slops up the soaked watery seed and weetabix we give her
She’s losing her depth perception. We believe she can barely see out of one of her eyes and the other is worse. I think this may be a reason to why she can’t pick the food up properly..
