Please, I need your opinions! What would you do?

Okay, just to clear up a few things:

We live in a small town of about..400 people. So everyone knows everyone who knows everyone. The people that the dogs belonged to, live 4 houses up from us. If I were driving..maybe 45 seconds up hill. The day before they showed up at our house, DH saw a dog up the road walking along the middle of the road, where these people live. Said that the dog was probably the mom cause she looked just like the little brown ones. So when the kids showed up and said it was their dog, we have no reason to believe they were lying. Plus while they were here, the one kid called his mother and said that the puppies had been found and wanted to know if she wanted the little blue puppy back. Of course she does! So he and his friends/cousins takes off with just the little blue one. Mind you, there were two puppies left. When DH came in the house and told me what was going on, I was beyond ticked and went off! I told him that he better go get that kid and tell them that if its their puppies they better take both of them and not just pick and choose which one they decide they want. Of course they are going to take the little cute one and leave the other. If they were so worried about their puppies being gone, you would think they would want both of them back! Not just the one. After its all said and done, I know I shouldnt have said that and keep the one remaining puppy. And went up the road myself to get the other one back. But I was so ticked I couldnt even talk straight.

As far as finding the dogs, one had showed up on our door step one afternoon and I was sure someone had dropped the puppy off, knowing how much of an animal lover I am, knowing I would take it in. This little puppy was fat as could be. He had a little buddha belly. We let him stay there two nights, thinking that, 1 he would go back where he came from, or 2 whoevers it was, would come looking for him. Its not uncommon in this town to see someone going door to door or driving around trying to find their lost or escaped animal. We live in the country. We're use to it. A couple days later I was outside playing with him when I heard puppies whinning. Told DH and he went looking across the street and found the other two. The house they were at, the people(they rent) had been gone for nearly 3 weeks, so we didnt think it was theirs. Later that day the owner of the house showed up to feed their horses and DH went and asked him about the dogs. The guy doesnt speak english that well and said 'puppies, shed(pointed at the shed and made a motion with his hand of under the shed) and then long(stretching his hands out wide) . Thats pretty much all DH could understand. Both puppies looked like they hadnt ate in days or drank anything either. When we were feeding them I was petting them and fleas where just jumping off all over the place. After they ate we gave them a bath, thinking that even if the owners showed up, they would at least be clean. While giving them a bath, I had a flea comb and globs of fleas were coming off them and were at least quater sized globs. Like Ive said, I worked at the humane society and seen all kinds of animals in bad shape. But as far as fleas go..Ive NEVER seen them this bad. They were just huge chunks of fleas and hair. We had to give them a bath three different times before we got 99% of the fleas off. The fleas were so bad that they had scabs and patches of hair gone from where the fleas had been. Im sure that is part of the reason they were so skinny. The fleas were sucking them dry. Since Im 'friends' with half of the town kids, (20s & 30s yr olds) I posted about them and how one showed up and we found the other two and asked around if anyone knew who they belonged to. Nothing! We asked neighbors and no one knew anything. Also to state, a few months back we found two black puppies in our neighbors backyard and did the same thing. No one claimed them, so we found them homes. I get home around 4 in the afternoon, I was outside with them pretty much all day long for 2 1/2 weeks. I was on the front porch and in our front yard. So if they were any of the neighbors, you would think within those 2 1/2 weeks someone would have said something. But nothing. I also wormed them and cleaned out their ears from what I can assume, were ear mites. This week when I went to TSC to get chicken feed, I had planned to get their shots and give them.

I wish I could go back and do it differently, but sadly I cannot. DH should not have given the puppies back, but made a bad judgement call and did. I should not have told him to run after the kid and give him the other one. And I should have also just ran after him or just drove up the road and told them right then and there. But I didnt. I cant go back and change that now. DH and I both made bad calls. Ive emailed the lady twice on FB, first with the letter I posted the other day, and then a day after that I sent another email saying I would be willing to pay $50 for the dog. Really..I would be willing to pay $100, but didnt want to say that at first. Knowing that she would choose the $100 instead of just saying no, I'll take $25 or $50. But I have not heard anything from her. The three times that I have went by her house to see if anyone is there. Theres not. No cars or trucks, nothing. I find it very hard to believe that these puppies found their way all the way down here by themselves. Not far when youre a human and either drive or walk. But thats a pretty long ways for small puppies. But... Ive been known to be wrong in the past. So who knows..

Some how, they could have been walking with their mother and some how wonder off.

But I dont know. I hope and prey that she emails me, I run into her, or something, and I get the puppy back. I would take both of them back!! Of course we couldnt keep the brown one, we already have two large dogs and a medium sized one, so 5 would be too many. BUT I would find a loving home for the little brown one. Like I did with the other brown puppy. When I find animals home, I make sure to the best of my knowledge, they are going to a good home. I ask tons of questions and make sure they know what they are getting into. So we'll see what happens.

Good luck! I understand that you're upset. With respect, your DH did something stupid. He should've consulted you first. I'm not a big dog lover, but I get mad when I see people treat dogs or other animal badly. We see that a lot where we live, sadly.
I really hope you get that puppy back.

Also, they can keep you as a friend, but hide your posts...basically it's so they don't have to "unfriend" you and you'd never know that your posts are hidden to that person.

wow that is heartbreaking. the perils of living in the country you get animals that arent cared for and invest time and money in them and then someone claims them. we had a dog show up 4 years ago during a t storm she was scared and frightened tried to locate her owners for a few days and then turned her over to animal control and she went to the shelter. I wanted to keep her she loved kids and was always with them but we couldnt afford the shots and spaying at the time.

Yep if they felt that they were "their pups" they should have taken all of them. This is frustrating at every angle the op looks at it. Yep you are in a woulda, coulda, shoulda predicament. At the least thankfully you took care of the pups when they were in need.

Hmmm, I think there must be a bit more to it than that. What if the owner of the lost animal had put lost ads in the newspaper, signs up all over the neighborhood, had reported them as lost to one or more of the various agencies that tries to re-unite people with their lost pets, had a collar with tags, etc. but if either none of these were looked into either deliberately or through lack of knowledge, it seems like there would be more diligence required on the part of the person who found the animal for a legitimate claim of ownership.

Years ago my kids and some of their friends found a lost dog and brought it home. I had them go to all the houses in the area and check to see if anyone was missing their dog, then I put an ad in the found section of the local newspaper that partially described the dog. I could not believe the people who called and asked if they could have it! I put the ad in so that the rightful owner could locate his/her dog. If we had not found them, we would have kept him. But we did, and they easily identified the part of his description that I had left out.

Thanks everyone. I hope I do as well.

I would like to see how it looks on her end. Would someone send me just a short message on FB without friending me first. Search for Holly Vandiver in Texas.

Ok, there were 2 Holly Vandivers that didn't have their state listed and I was able to send a test email to one of them and not the other. If you are the Holly hugging someone on your profile pic, I was able to send an email to you. If you're the other one, there was no option to even send an email.
