So I went to my feed store for chick crumbles and dog food and ended up with 4 new chicks. I already have 5 four week olds I just moved to the coop, and the brooder box they were in looked soooooo empty.
The guy at the store didn't know what breeds they had ordered
but he said that they were likely 85% female. He orders from Belt Hatchery, so they could be:
Standards (Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire Red, Barred Rock, White Leghorn, Black Sex-Link, Golden Sex-Link),
Heavy Breeds (Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Silver Laced Wyandotte),
and I doubt they ordered any of the "Specialty Breeds" like Easter Eggers, Delawares, Danish Brown Leghorn, Jersey Black Giant, Light Brahma, Welsummer, or Cuckoo Maran, but it's on their order list so I'm throwing it out there.
My others have grown so fast I don't remember them being this small. The all yellow chick looks a little bigger than the others. How big are bantam chicks? Noticably larger? Also, are any of these roosters? I'm new to all of this so I'm not good at sexing, but I know some breeds can be sexed according to markings or leg color when this young.
#1 Here's the big yellow one, and a couple of pics of yellow chick with another chick for size comparison
#2 White with black/grey on wings
#3 the chipmunk
#4 Black one with a white spot on it's head
Everyone here seems so wise... and definitely helpful. Any insight would be greatly appreciated by this newbie. Thanks!
