These are my chickens I got this spring:
Speckled Sussex:
I have 3 SS Roosters and I can only keep 2 so which one is the best.

On your speckled sussex, pick the ones with the least amount of white. They are actually kind of young, as their first molt tends to change their color pattern. Definitely get rid of mister floppy comb (#2)

On the RIR - the bird in the middle picture (#2) is the one you want to keep.

Thanks
so the SS hen with alot of white is not a very good one?
I was thinking of keeping the 2 top RIRs.
I will look at the SS roo later and see if his comb is still like that cause I don't remember it being floopy.

The feather pattern for the Speckled Sussex should be a lustrious mahagony bay, tipped with a small white spangle (diamond shaped) with a bar/chevron of black separating the two colors.

Like so:

I know someone requested the breed standards, but it takes a lot of time that I don't have to type it up. I'm sure if you searched out breeder clubs on the Sussex and RIR, you'll find a copy posted somewhere. A black & white copy of the SOP is only about $14 + shipping, the only difference is that it doesn't have the artistic renderings of the breeds (which are not to be used for judging fowl anyways).

The reason I liked #2 RIR better than the others is he's filled out much more and appears to have the proper points for his comb shape. You'll need to select for darker red coloring as you breed up your flock.

So the main thing to look for are these?:
Number of points on comb (how many?)
Color (shade, pattren)
color of legs and skin
aggrssiveness
Anything else?
