Please, no politics.

There are some political topics that backyard chicken people should take seriously, and think about, and let their representatives in government know how they feel.

There was an effort in Congress to make rules to prohibit the shipping of live chickens or chicks.
In the wake of 911 and avian influenza.
I sent my congressman email with links to support continuing to allow live chicks to be shipped by air. I told him that we needed to allow backyard birds, because these backyard breeders were the breeders who provided the unusual breeds that kept the Missouri poultry industry from dying due to the single-breed poultry industry's susceptibility to the then-current avian diseases in the early twentieth century. His staff called me at work(!) for more info, and he came out in favor of hatcheries being able to ship chicks. And they still allow shipping chickens and chicks today.

BUT, FOR HOW MUCH LONGER?

Full disclosure...if you were on any hatchery's mailing list at that time, you got this email asking you to contact your congressman. I am very sure I was NOT the only person writing to my congressman for this cause.

If you care about your backyard poultry, you must step up when you are needed to support them.

This is not hold-your-nose "politics," this is being aware of current events and acting to protect our shared interests.
