Please, please help! Bleeding chicken.

lidocaine has pain killer in it and they say not to use it on chickens although I seriously doubt that one time and little bit is gonna do her in. Leave her alone now for the night. In the morning check and see if anything is draining out other than blood. That will help to know what it could be.... Also you said it looked like something chewed her but you also said it is a gash. Exactly what shape is the opening...straight? across? down? round? how big/long is it? It started as a red bump correct? Did/does it feel hot? Does the opening look like something cut it or poked it or does it look like it tore? Calm down you are doing fine! Good night...get some rest.

ETA: you could rinse some off if it will make you feel better....

The wound is straight across. My guess is that her beak did it. She has been pecking at it. It originally looked like something "got her" because there was a lot of blood and the feathers were everywhere. When I looked closely, the area is no longer red (it was yesterday) but rather white-ish. Firm. Gash is about a centimeter across and only blood is coming out, and not that much.

I am going to leave her alone for now...thank you for that advice. I'm just hoping she doesn't eat the band aid and have more troubles?

Sigh.

Oh God, that would be my luck! I am leaning toward an inflamation of some sort. If it was red before and now it has busted and lost the redness...it could be fixing itself. Go to bed. Check her in the morning and let us know how it looks. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about the lidocaine right now. As the previous person said it is probably most important to keep her from pecking at it all night long and now that you have the bandage secured turn the lights down and let her rest. Make sure she has fresh food and water. Don't worry about the lidocaine but don't put more on!!

Use neosporin without any pain medication in it. So nothing that ends in CAINE!

I just can't get a good fix on where this bulge/cut is. If it was on her face she couldn't peck at it. I was reading kind of quickly but is it like a pebble or more like a golf ball? Could she have gotten bitten by a spider or something? I had a lump the size of a golf ball. I scratched it and it bled. I think it was a spider bite or something?? I will be watching this post to see how she does. The crop is way down on the chest so I don't think it is a crop issue either.

Good luck. I know you will do well!

Just read your last post. I don't think she would probably eat it but if she got it off she could make the cut bigger. Do you have vet wrap (called coban I think for people). Maybe if you just turn off the lights she will go to sleep!

It is on the side of her neck. On a person, it would be where your collarbone is...right where her neck attaches to her body. But she can definitely get it; I can see her doing it. How do I stop her from pecking? Do they have e-collars for chickens!!!??

They don't have collars, but they do have those pinless peeper things to keep chickens from pecking at other chickens. Don't know if they would work, they fit in the nostrils. I ordered 25 but think I have 23 left. 2 got lost in the fracas. If you can get a pinless peeper on a chicken you are one heck of a woman that is all I can say. Something tells me they don't like plastic shoved up their noses. You are more than welcome to some of them!

I think the towel idea is good if you can keep it from slipping too far down her neck (without strangling her!)

Wow, so this chicken is not in good shape

.

I cleaned up her wound with betadine & BlueKote and it seems fine. However, the area where it is is a GIANT bulge, getting bigger each day. Today she can't turn her neck because of it. Under the feathers it is pink, like skin. It looks like a massive growth and doesn't make any sense.

I suppose this is it for this chicken, huh? I don't want her to suffer. Yesterday she was eating & drinking just fine, but this morning she was reluctant to come out of the coop. I am really disheartened at the thought of putting her down.

Can someone at least take a stab at what this is, in case I ever see it again? I know the pictures aren't great, but you can see the pink and where it sits. The lump sticks out almost 2 inches.
