Please post information you've heard about Malays

Okay, does this sound like a good idea:

I will make one BIG pen for them (due to their size), and I will split it in half. On one side I will have (as long as the chicks make it okay and are healthy when they arrive) 1 rooster with 2 hens (since I ordered 3 hens), and on the other side I will have 1 rooster with one hen. I will make them special shelters due to their size. I am going to keep at least one male with the females at all times, so the eggs will be fertile.
I think that's a pretty good plan, don't you?

Wow, those are some birds!! The DH says not to get any because they will scare the neighbors! Good luck, and I'm sorry i can't comment on your pen design with any intelligence because I've never even seen anything that looks like that!!!

Your pen sounds like a good start, only concern I would have is making sure that the males cannot see one another through the fence that separates them. As with more aggressive species, they may try and fight through the wire, thus resulting in injury to the heads, beaks, feet. It is an easy fix. I use the corrugated roofing material that you get at farm supply stores/hardware stores/home depot/etc... It comes in various lengths and is usually around 2.5 feet wide. These wired to the fencing, nailed to posts, etc. at ground level will make a solid barrier so the males cannot see one another. You may want one a bit higher than 2.5 feet depending on the size of your "godzilla" birds, (had a friend call some malay that, think it is hillarious). Yes gamefowl take a little more preparation and a little more work than your average chicken, but they are just such awesome birds to raise...

Also, I found an excellent reference book on Oriental Gamefowl/longtails/longcrowers. It is called, ironically enough, "Oriental Gamefowl" by Horst W. Schmudde. Tons of great pics from breeders all over the world, background histories on all the different types, as well as info on breeding and keeping/housing the birds. I would highly recommend finding ya a copy, it is quite the usefull tool...

Oooops, forgot some interesting info...

1. Malay blood has been used in many of the chicken breeds we have today..(brahma, RIR,+many more...)

2. Typical colors; wheaten, black, blackred, pile, spangled, cuckoo, and white.

I would like to get into the other colors... like red pyle, wheaten, and white. But the only color variety I found was the red shouldered variety, which are beautiful! I bet I'll be the talk in my area for awhile because of my "mammoth" chickens.

If you are looking for some of the other colors besides the standard offered wheatens, check into yahoo groups like Rare_Chickens and orientalgamebreeders...you'll find breeders there....

CUDA, is your flight pen that you showed on your site, is that used for Malays? Because there is smaller birds in it. Could that hold 2-3 malays? Can a malay get up in the air well? Also, what are the plans on that?
