My friend has a hen that has a swollen hard abdomen and some discharge. Thought it was egg bound or water belly but doesn’t seem to be either. She is eating, not drinking much. She’s been soaked and treated for gleet with not much improvement. Today she passed this dry clump of black stuff. And is making this noise repeatedly. I have no idea what this could be. Anyone have any ideas?

Could you possibly get pictures of the mass? Is it something that just kinda happened over night or more of a gradually getting larger? She definitely looks uncomfortable. Is she able to walk? I'm no expert. If water belly and egg bound can be ruled out if could be EYP ( Egg Yolk Peritonitis).

What is the discharge like?

Is this hen pooping at all? I see what looks like a hard clump of poop, but is she having any other poops?

She may be having a hard time expelling an egg or lash material. I'd give her 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 now, then once daily for a week.

Get her hydrated and see that she's eating.

A hard swollen abdomen, could be a mass/tumor, internal laying, salpingitis, eyp, etc. it's difficult to know. If you lose her, having a necropsy through your state lab or doing an informal investigation yourself can sometimes help you understand what was going on.
