I’ve got a chicken. 5 months old. I noticed she was acting off when I got home today. Just slower than usual. Not wanting food. Crop is squishy. Like a balloon and we have this in the stool. She’s not pulsing her vent or squatting. At this point should I treat for sour crop?

It’s her crop right? Massage it and see if her breath smells bad. Isolate her over night and see if it empty’s. You said Squishy and large it could be a sour crop. If in the morning it’s HARD she could be impacted (long grass, straw). You need to do this little test to narrow down what your really dealing with. If she were mine this is what I’d do....I would NOT medicate UNTIL I knew what I was dealing with. I only offer water for the night and check her crop in the morning. Keep us posted. Best wishes

I would start her on Corid for possible coccidiosis asap. It kills quickly, and the poop might be an indicator. Has she lost muscle across her breast?

Hey..

Been a while and still new but been reading lol.

Hey did you feed starter medicated? Shouldn’t be this if you fed a 50lb bag first. Also, coccidiosis, goes through a chicken coop like wildfire. I had a case.
Wet ground opened up old coccidiosis in dirt and within 30 minutes, 13 chickens gone. Mine looked me like ‘I’m sick’ and fell over. I saw bloody stool, then dead bird. One by one. Now we do a yrly bleach wash into soil and cover with new sand. No probs since.

? On that note, could someone tell me what the dose for Corid is by a chicken?

Is it hot? I give my chickens 1 gallon of electrolytes once a week when temps are in the 90’s for safe measure.

Have you added any meds/wormers to water at the same time as electrolytes?
Everyone here drinks from same glass lol so if wormer or Corid given at same time, some chickens are water hogs and add electrolytes then they are drinking and then causing an overdose.

Turns out she was egg bound. After the salt bath I left her alone in a quiet dark room. Came back and she laid an egg. Perked right up after some food and went out to bed in the coop. Had one more odd egg this morning. Looks like they make have been against each other. Hopefully we won’t have this scare again but thank you all for the replies.
