The useless, pitiful sobbing and wailing of the trapped pawns.

The old faithful guard dog at the girls heels.

They thought by running, they could escape.

Chapter 1

But let's back up.

He would screech. And she would cry. Then more screaming and tears.
This is how it was in Akemi's house. Screaming and crying. It was an everyday thing.
And he would hit her. She'd only hunker down and protect her head.
"Stand up straight!" Her drunk father would demand, still whipping her. "Face your punishment!"
Akemi refused, parting her lips in a useless wail, hands covering her head and face, trying to guard him from hitting her too hard in the head, for she had a shunt in her brain.
Akemi's mother was hopeless too. Passed out on the old, worn out, red couch, she was no protection.
He would finally give up and pass out too. And she would stay in the position she was in, crying pitifully.
She feared that one day he would kill her.
