Bill, it's one of these: http://www.etcsupply.com/ranco-etc111000000-digital-temperature-controller-p-86.html?osCsid=55cf48b559be2c96ceb290e45fb52b7f

I hang the thermocouple sensor down to about 4" off the floor, and about 18" from the light flood-beam ...... as that's where you want the reading from. It's a digital unit, and has immediate response....and as reliable as can be. With the 250 watt red lamp, it keeps the temp in the brooder pretty stable all over inside. Here's a pic showing the thermocouple hanging down. There's 95 Bobs in the brooder.

I really like your set up. First thing ya know I'm sitt'in around think'in stupid thoughts. Just one more Big pen, maybe a new car port so there all under the same roof. My grand dad told me 25 years ago when I got my first 50 pheasant chicks,"it would easier to raise cats than gamebirds" I never knew him to be wrong, but dam I hate cats....Bill

Randall you inspired me! I'm gonna make a new brooder. It will have a wire floor with a slide out aluminum bottom. Then it will have slide out wood panels on the sides so I can make a grow out pen out of it. Great brooder Randall!

Thanks. I've got a lot of retrofits goin' on with all my quail stuff now, on top of building a cabinet incubator that GQF will be jealous of....

Yeah, you will never have enough "big pens" if you think like I do. I visualize "290 acres of quail pens" ........... then......... I wake up!
