About 4 weeks ago, we got 4 chicks from TSC that were ALL supposed to be pullets. We made it clear we DID NOT WANT any chicks from the straight run bin and were assured all our chicks would be female.

WELL

Out of the 4 I'm pretty sure 2 are male. We can't have more than 8 "pets" in our township and chickens count as pets. We already have 2 cats and a dog therefore leaving us with a maximum allowable number of 5 chickens.

The wyandotte (pictured in the back, prominent wattles) I am positive is a rooster. But the mystery grey/black chick is still, well, a mystery. I'm 99% sure he's a he, but am looking for a glimmer of hope because I'm still a beginner and my success rate for the game of Hen or Roo is probably around 70%.

Please tell me there's hope that the grey/black one is a hen 🙏 Also, the last 3 photos are the same chick from different angles

Good looking chicks, but do you really want us to tell you you're crazy ?????

So many people get caught in the cuteness trap and buy from places like TSC with clerks that often really don't know beans about chicks and their gender... So sad.
My local store has a lady who knows her stuff... Well enough that she knew the chicks that came in were not what they said they were, so they actually posted them as straight run Mystery Chicks. Gotta hand it to them!

She is definitely a jewel. A rare jewel in the retail trade.

Hello there.
May I ask what you are seeing that leads you to believe the mystery chick is a cockerel?

So when I got the chicks from TSC I got 2 "cuckoo marans" and 2 wyandottes. Mystery chick, who I don't believe is a cuckoo marans based on coloring/leg coloring, looks VERY different from the other supposed marans. Superchick (mystery chick), holds himself higher, has wings that aren't as long or full, and has a tail that's starting to sickle. Plus, his comb is MUCH brighter and double the size of Peep, his counterpart. Attached is the most recent photos I have of Peep, which is from last week so she's larger with more feathers now, but still has the same body shape and comb size/color.

It wasn't a "cuteness trap", we thought they were a good place to get chicks from. They weren't even the breeds I went for, but that's what they had so I actually did look up the breeds they told me they were first before choosing to buy them. I checked my city ordinances, chose a copp and run, did A LOT of research prior to purchasing them. But in that research I didn't come across anything that made me think TSC wasn't a good choice for a supplier.
