please tell me what is wrong with my goat....

How much Ammonium Chloride should be offered to male goats and how often for prevention?
Should doe ever be given any as well for good measure?
Specifically I have Nigerian Dwarves.

PS What are FF goats ? Saw that and never knew what they are
thanks

AC doesn't help, it doesn't even work as a preventative unless you're trying to prevent scum in your water buckets LOL. surgery is the only fix and I haven't heard enough to think it is UC although that sounds like what it is, she said he was peeing all over in one post... amonium chloride is what he needs in his feed for prevention, although most wethers/bucks don't even need grain... I hope the vet can help at this point...

You said AC doesn't work as a preventative but then that it is what he needs in his feed for prevention... am I missing something here?

when he would strain he would sprinkle some pee. When the vet cut the tip he peed everywhere and was very calm after. The vet did tell me there is not much you can do to prevent it other than backing offthe goat pellets, some get it regardless.

I think she meant ACV=Apple Cider Vinegar

You want to keep his calcium to phosphorus ratio at 2 parts calcium 1 part phosphorus, this will help the abroption and utilization of calcium as apposed to it becoming UC- most meat goat pellets have amonium chloride in it so if you have a buck in rut meat goat pellets are the best to give them until they get back to weight... Wethers don't need grain, even if they're skinny, work with prevention like worming/fecals to find out WHY and work with the problem and treatments, don't pump them full of grain trying to combat the problem... here is an AWESOME article on buck raising...

does don't need AC

FF is first freshener- their first time having a baby

hope all this helps!

Gotcha. You had me all confused there for a while. I think Kate did mean AC and not ACV though.

This thread is a perfect example of why I don't post much anymore!

Mrs Turbo...PM me if you'd like, I can clear this stuff up for you. It's really not rocket science, but it's not as simple as "take away the feed and throw hay at it" either.

Wishing your buck the best of luck with this, either way.

I lost a buck to this a couple of yours ago. I had no idea what was going on with him and we don't have a vet around here that knows squat about goats. I took him to the only vet around here and he couldn't save him. I do not have any bucks anymore. Just my 2 girls. I am glad he is better Mrs. Turbo, but like kate said he is by no means out of the woods. Goodluck
