I dunno about "terribly skewed" numbers, but many of those designs have been around a long time. Most of the old books I have show them or similar designs. They are proven.
All of them strike me as solid and with the expectation that the keeper is both attentive and making the chickens do what they should. There is nothing haphzard about the ones I looked at.
