Please please help me. I am a first timer but my two boys are obsessed with our eggs,it would be heartbreaking to not make it as we got so close.

We are at the end of day 27 of Pekin ducks (so due tomorrow morning) and we can see that they have pipped internally. However, only one managed to create a tiny crack in the outershell (opposite of the air sac). It seems to me that the air sacs are bigger than what the pictures show.

There is some light movement and a slight noise (yesterday was louder). I feel I should help, but not sure.

Please help me. I stayed up all night and read all the post on assisting but not sure if I should do anything now or wait.

Thank you so much.

Erika

your anxiety is normal, take a DEEP breath. the end is always a waiting game and a tough one at that. We are all here for you if you need to post a rant or two as we have all been there. Good luck Oh, :frow Welcome from New Orleans. Hope a duck person can help, I see Kiki has alerted some.

Are you able to post a picture of the air cell so we know how big you mean? (I'm also having air cell issue with one of mine, so we can compare notes and get through the waiting together)

How long ago was internal pip? They can take such a long time, and it feels like even longer, between internal and external! Your other one may just be quick pipping the shell as opposed to this one being slow

I have no idea when the internal pip initially occured, but my guess is at least 18 hrs ago.

I am also struggling with the humidity as you should have high humidity but I probably kept it too high during the incubation which is why the air sac is too big so I wonder if it makes sense for me to keep high humidity now in last phase.

I will wait as suggested here. I just feel so frustrated :(

Your frustration is normal, sorry but I only have chickens, so am not much help. Duck people will come along and be of a lot of help, in the mean time don't beat yourself up over mother nature. :hugs Rant away if it helps you!! :barnie

It's a horrible, helpless feeling isn't it!

Just know they can go about 48 hours between internal and external pip before oxygen runs out, with a normal sized air cell. I find that one's that take their time now absorbing the yolk zip quicker as they aren't trying to zip whilst still absorbing the yolk after external pip, now hat's really frustrating!

If the air cell is really massive it can cause growth problems as the duckling doesn't have enough room to grow as it should. Then it may have trouble hatching, but I'd say wait and give it a chance first.

What is your humidity at?

Having high humidity through the incubation process will actually cause the opposite to happen, the air cells will be too small due to being unable to lose enough moisture. So, keep your humidity up through hatch if you think you cells are too big.
When the chicks get ready to hatch, the drawdown on the air cells can be quite dramatic so I would not worry too much seeing as how you have a pip.
Ducks pip sometimes in multiple places on the egg too, so I would wait another couple of hours before doing anything. They do take their time. I will tag some folks to help here:
@WVduckchick, @azygous, Can you guys help the op?
