Happy to say that my first "big" hatch of silver Penciled's well be on feb 8-9 the 1588 seems to be at 102 but i am not sure i trust any of those thermometers <put's get spot check on my to buy list>

These could be pure Penciled i am not sure. There is a Splash Australorp rooster in the pen to, along with Blue australorps, and splash Austrlorp hen, and 5 laying and one Dom. hen.... But the SP rock roo is "head" rooster in that pen. So it's going to be a cross between Silver Penciled Rock and some thing else if a cross.

Ohh my rocks seem to have gotten bigger in the last few months, the hens are HUGE. I need to weigh them in a few months (they are a year or so old now).

I have one 6 week old pullet down stairs that is gonna need to go out with the yellows when these hatch.

Hi all!
I have a barred rock in my flock and had a question abt their laying.
She is 28 wks right now and layed her first egg at abt 23 wks
Right after her first egg we had several days below freezing so she stopped laying.
Once it warmed up she started laying some but for the bast 2-3 weeks nothin and the weather has been great and the other hens have been laying regularly.
Any ideas? Is this typical w/rocks?
Any input would be great!

Call Ducks I hear you on size. My hens have really devloped well here. I am now getting xlrg eggs regularly from them and no doulbe yolks. Ya. I still need to get a scale to weight them but they are looking alot better then first year. Tehy are really working the property too. We have almost 5 acres here. They have been down almost to gate which is 1000 feet from coop. In the muclh getting all the grubs. Good Chickens.

I am shocked that they have continued to grow out and fill at a years age. They just get bigger and bigger. I hope to show some of my hens a my rooster in May at the show. There is also a poultry judge that is coming down to see them in person some time (he breeds Silver Penciled Wyandottes)

That is that slow growing that the heritage lines have instead of the production lines. Everyone is so use to hatchery chicks being grown as 6 months. We have to wait to see true growth past a year. That when we get to do our final culling for breeding birds. My they are something at this age arn't they.

Yes. They are massive and not skittish at all
