Plymouth Rock thread!

I'm not real sure of what you are asking for, but I'll show you a blue barred with what I think is pretty good leg color, and a pullet that has the typical dark wash on the front of her yellow legs. You can see between her toes the yellow that is the color of the back of her legs..........stan

Yeah... that is kinda what my pullets legs look like. The thread I read, and can't find... NYRED? (A Judge) Chimed in and said they were WRONG. Should be yellow or dusky... I just don't know what dusky is and how to get there. I just read a thread and someone used a splash with a white rock to get all blues... Didn't know that would work, but they were working on leg color and I can do that, I have 2 splash pullets and I know where I can get a White Rock roo.....

How yellow should the leg be? I have some Brahmas and BOY are their legs are YELLOW. Is there a "color match chart" for legs I need to get

I just got a couple of Good Shepard Barred Rock Roos, I need to look at their legs... I just don't have a reference.

I just saw this thread and wondered what is the history of the nice barred rock bantams. Greg English has some that look like these. Wonder where you got them from.

The Silver Pencil led large fowl look very nice stunning color. They don't look all that small to me.

I found a scale today as I was cleaning out my barn. Did not think I would be asking this question but have you weighed these birds that originated out of Michigan??"

I don't think you are that far off on them.

If you are a little light or at standard weight you can get them larger in a few years. But if they are at standard weight at ten months should not be a concern. They got very nice color.

Look forward to your reply. Scott did you show your Colombians at Newman?

Do you have that nice pullet from last year matted up you should see some nicer chicks this year than last. bob

Bob, if you are asking about the Silver Pencil pics I posted, yes I did weigh them, but with a kitchen scale. As I remember, the largest pullet was 6 1/2 pounds, and the cockerel was around 9+. I think they are lighter than that though. I don't own them anymore, but the new owner might chime in with correct weights. .........stan

Someone on here told me that "dusky" is anything that has a bit of yellow. A dark wash with a bit of yellow down the back is fine, pretty much as long as there is a bit of yellow they are SQ.
I'm not an expert though, so correct me if I'm wrong :)

Hi all been a spell since I've been on this thread, Will probly be on a little more frequent now that thanks to Mrs. kathyinmo has blessed (or cursed me with another bug)LOL with some great stock from her bunch which are Good Shepard farms lineage Barred Rocks. Right now I've only got 6 cockerels growing out but have contacted Matt to hook up later in the spring to get me some pullets to go with these boys.
But my question on here today is of Buff Rock concern, is there many available and how good are they so on a so forth. If someone could head me in that direction I would be most gracious for the info.

Jeff

That helps! Thanks

Here's a couple pics that might help as well.
The first is of my Bantam Black Rock, he has yellow legs, but they are a little paler than I would like.

And then there is my Bantam Blue Rock. She has "dusky" yellow legs, see the dark wash down the front?

If mine had that much yellow I would be tickled! My splash pullets look like that, but not their pullets. Got to work on that....

I'm not savvy enough to know which thread to reply to, but anyway.
I am raising barred rocks this year for next years laying flock. I also have ordered a kind new to me: New Hampshire Reds. I generally stick to some breed of rocks, since they are good dual purpose birds. I admire their old-fashioned sturdiness! I have been selling a few here and there and they seem popular too.

Well ya "done good" with your choices. I say if you already like the hatchery Rocks and the way they perform, then you'll be happy with the New Hampshires. Just think of them as a light red colored Rock, not a whole lot of differences in much anything but the name and color. You should be impressed with them and they will be great layers of big brown eggs too.

I'm looking for info on heritage stock Buff Rocks? anyone?

Jeff

PS I went back and read my post during editing "always" and decided I should add the "key-word" here is hatchery stock, before someone accuses me of comparing/classing a Plymouth Rock and a New Hampshire as not much different. It seems there's always someone lying in wait to pounce on such phrases and stuff, so I cleared the air a little first. Ok (smiles)
