Plymouth Rock thread!

Your guys' feed cost makes me want to puke.

I won't even tell you ours...

But it's over $15... closer to $20 and it is not great feed.

Organic: Closer to $40!

:ep

This is why I soak it. Helps with the feed costs.

I calculated food savings a week and it was $26.32 in savings between dry and wet.

it can be that high here too. I do buy some chick starter that is $17 a bag and if I buy from TSC it is over $18. you have to shop around. I used to buy from a local mill but it was soy and very dusty loved them and the feed but preferred the meat in the feed.

We have:

Blueseal
Purina
Co-Op
& Shur Gain

That is all we have here. The most expensive is Blueseal, followed by Co-Op (local), Purina Mills, and Shur-Gain cheapest. I do not like the Shur-Gain feed, and don't want to do Purina. I go with Co-Op because it's local and the service is the best out of all of them. None of these feeds have animal protein. I have to supplement it. I plan to eventually mix my own. I can go through co-op and get rid of the soybean meal and ask for fish meal. I also want to get rid of the corn in it.

I'm not so concerned about it being organic, but I'd love to have GMO free food for them.

I can get my own feed mixed but they would use soy so why bother? my co-op is not so nice.....they are really the last place I want to do business with.

I'm really lucky. The guys that work at our co-op really like us, and know us by name. They joke with us, give us sound advice and are just all around great people.

Wish soy wasn't so common in feed :(

My Barred Plymouth Rocks are 3 weeks old now. The SPPR are 4 weeks. Going through awkward stages! Some of the Barred Rocks are very slow to feather in. They are all slow, but some have next to nothing in terms of feathers.

Someone on BYC was telling me that they used a small cement mixer to mix their own feeds. At my level of broke that is still too expensive for me but I just realized that a compost tumbler that has never been used for compost could mix small batches too and they can be found for $99. We have a grain mill just 20 minutes away, in Springfield, Tn. I just need to get enough 55 gallon storage drums because the lowest amount they sell in is 1/2 ton. I have sheep and mini horses too so I just wouldn't be buying for my birds.

Roo or pullet? 8 weeks old!!! All pictures of the same chickie.
