I had the pleasure of receiving a text message from Robert Murphy last night on breeding Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks. Mr Murphy has been breeding the Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks for many years and has a great amount of knowledge on the breed. With his advice in mind I will continue to breed my Horstman line females on the darker side to produce nice Males "cockerel breeding line". I will also continue to breed my Padgett line males on the lighter side to produce nice Females "pullet breeding line". I will breed my Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks using the Double Mating System but this will come after I have culled for type each season.

This is my 7 week Barred Rock (Hatchery chick - sexed at Meyers as a Pullet). Would love some opinion from folks who know Rocks really well on gender. At about 4 weeks people were telling me it was a cockerel because there was a little burst of comb development. Comb hasn't had another big growth since then - pretty similar to how it was at 4-5 weeks. From the darker coloring and dark splash down legs I was thinking Pullet. Also as a little chick it did have a pretty defined head spot. "She" does have a pink comb but it looks exactly the same color as my Golden Sex Link Pullet so I'm a bit confused by the whole thing about Pullets combs not pinking up when I know my Sex Link is a Pullet. All this is so confusing.

Any thoughts? Guidance on understand the whole guessing gender thing?

I would say pullet. :)

I'm saying pullet.

Generally, you can sex a common (hatchery?) barred Rock if you have a male and female side by side -- the males will be lighter than the females. This chick looks to me as though she has the shape of a pullet; also, she is very dark.
