Plymouth Rock thread!

Does anyone have pictures of columbian rocks or partridge rocks? I have fallen in love with all th PRs. Unfortunately have just one Barred. And it will be sometime before I can get anymore chicks. So I have to live vicariously through you all!
Look up posts in this thread from Yard full o Rocks and you'll find some fine Columbian Rocks.

I love all varieties of the Plymouth Rock, but this thread has begun to revolve around Silver Pencilled as of late. I have them, and I love them, but I am missing the talk about the other varieties lately.

Fred, how are your Barred coming along?

Yard full of Rocks, your Columbian?

Forgive me.. I can't recall who has the Buff. I would love to see some updated pictures. :)

I don't see enough talk about the Whites either. Hardly ever with the BBS Rocks. Partridge? Seems like forever...

I have been slacking with pictures. My young Barred are coming along VERY nicely.

My oldest boy (just over a year) has saved countless young ones from hawks this month. Forgive his stance, he is trying to impress the girls (and or me - at least I like to think so) :p

I will be sharing some more pictures by the weekend.

Work has been keeping me terribly busy (along with 2 sons, hunting season, etc, etc).....BUT, I have finally selected my breeder pullets for next yr and have banded them. I'll try to get pictures of them this weekend and post them.

School is still out on my males......DANG tails are taking forever to develop?

Aside from the male above taking good care of the girls, I really like the tail I see developing.....he should finish out nicely

Of all the SPRs I've seen lately, the pullet above in the profile picture is one of the best I've seen for type. Seems to have a nice long back, GREAT front end, nice yellow legs, good wing carriage and VERY VERY little cushion. I can't speak to color/pattern as I don't know what the standard calls for there.

I would say she is a good start to a nice flock. Personally, I'd try to tighten the feather a bit, and get some lift to the tail, but overall, she's a nice looking bird!

Not sure if its just the picture, or how he's standing, but the cockerel in the top picture appears to be knock-kneed....have you noticed that?

Cyn, I sure think that Wynette is one good lookin' broad!

Of course you think that ;)

HOLY CRAP. Are you SURE that's a PR?

I think he may be crossed with ostrich.

Actually, my personal favorites are the Barreds, but I also have blue, black and splash, with blue being a close second to the barreds for me in the PRs. My blues have recently been molting so not great pics of those hens at the moment. In PRs, I'm generally not fond of whites, buffs and though I know many love the SPRs, they are not among my favorites as far as color variety. To each his own, right? Plymouth Rocks, period, are fabulous, though! To me, it's right at the top of the list for best all round breed for a backyard/farm flock.
I have to agree about the Barreds. My favourite variety hands down.

I sold five pairs that the barring was not as I'd like it to be. I kept the rest. I have at least 20 of them. Any time I see a broody, she gets PBR eggs. I actually don't have any setting right now. I have three hens raising chicks, but none setting. That's a first since June!

Yes he is still growing out the tail. My backup rooster is as well. They are just like your males, taking forever to grow it in!

Aoxa, very nice male.

Thanks fir the compliments, that means a lot to me. I have only been breeding Rocks for about 18 months and its nice to get lucky. As for the cockerel, no I haven't noticed but now I will have to do an inspection. Thanks for thoughts and suggestions. Please continue to give more folks.

Found a picture of Ostrich at 13 weeks. Figured I'd share.. lol

Note the rooster in the foreground is my backup and still growing. His tail was non-existant when I got him, but IS coming in. Just very slowly

The slow feathering guy? No matter how stinkin' nice he turns out? I'd not use him. These birds are already so slow. I believe we all need to note those which are marginally quicker to feather and bulk out. We need to use these selected birds in the breeding pens. Just my opinion folks, don't be throwing the old tomatoes left over from the killing frost. LOL

I have to agree with Fred. That cockerel has feathering issues if he's still like that at 13 weeks old. Four weeks, not a big problem, but thirteen? I'd be leery of using him, even if he ends up spectacular at some point in time.

That's what I figured. I have so many nice boys to choose from. One has really fantastic barring and great type at the same age. I have been keeping him under lock and key (not really - but protected) in with the silkies.. Hawks have already killed three of my heritage rock juveniles. I can't risk my best during migration time.

But I couldn't very well sell him either. People would think he's diseased!
