Edited to Add: These photos are from the 'ol archives. They are from Spring/Fall of 2009. Same birds:

These are the Orps. They aren't running together, but certainly could if I wanted them to.

To round out what's left - I have Blue & Black Cochins. That's it for breeds. I do still have my Rhode Island Reds and Black & White Langshans, but they are likely being donated to 4H. The only way I could focus on a breeding program is to downsize and really *choose* what I wanted. Jack of all trades - master of none.

Oh, I also have Blue, Black, Splash & yes.. BARRED 'Easter Eggers' just for the heck of it. They're my egg birds, as the Show Quality stock isn't really renowned for they're massive production abilities.

I had a Barred Rock hen was a doll with us humans but tended to be a little over dominant to the other hens (especially a Buff Orpington hen we had raised with her). I don't know if it was the Buff Orpington's overly shy/timid/you can walk all over me attitude or what, but she was the low girl on the totem pole for sure.

So mind you my response comes from this one experience, I would not keep these two breeds together. As sweet as rocks can be they do, in my opinion, have a get out of my way at whatever cost kind of attitude. Headstrong! That's the word I was looking for.

I have a Partridge Rock girl now and she's got that same Head of the Line mentality. Maybe it's just my luck, or maybe I just babied the rocks more and so they thought they were more "special".

I really don't know. They may be fine all together. I'm sure someone here has way more experience with these two breeds together than I do.

LightHawk, if you have adequate space, the Barred and Buff should do fine together. I have had 3 Delawares, 4 BBS rocks, 2 "mixed rocks", a partridge rock and 3 Buff Orps together for a long time.

The "dominant hens" will be the "dominant hens" no matter what the breed.

Yard full o' rocks :

QuailHollow....that roo is gorgeous!!!

Do you ever sell hatching eggs? If so, I would be VERY interested. My BRs are nowhere near that nice

I'll add you to the list. Can't say I'll be able to fill everyone's requests this year, but I'll see what I can do.

The photos you added to your above post are just stunning. That is what I need for my crew. And I'll always have BRs. To me, they are the perfect chicken. Though most hatchery types do not go broody, seems that the further removed from the hatchery you get your lines, the most their natural inclinations kick in. One of the hens hatched from my flock has gone broody for walkswithdog, and in this frigid weather, too.
