Plymouth Rock thread!

Any idea what composes/how one makes/how one avoids a birchen?
BYC member "Halo" raises LF Blue/Black Rocks.....I would suggest contacting her to see if she has any eggs for sale. She is located in Fla somewhere

You will need a start from "pure" stock in order to have Blue Rocks. Keep in mind that the "blue" color does NOT breed true (i.e., Blue mated to Blue does not yield all blue offspring)....you will get combinations of Blue, Black and Splash depending upon the matings you set up

Hope that helps

I've recently been asked about my plans for 2013 and breeding season, so I thought I'd post a few pix of the 2 breeder cockerels I'm using this season. I still have a long way to go (especially in the area of color) but these are the two cockerels I kept as breeders for the 2013 season. Saddle and hackle color are weak on both, but they had better type than any of my other choices. Tails on both of these are better than their sire, but still lack enough lift. Back length seems to stay good and front ends are "getting better" but still a long way to go. After the Newnan show, Colby (my 14 yr old) thinks he wants to show a male at Newnan next year....we'll see

What's the average size of your roos? I'm thinking about getting a BR to mix with some new hens. Also, how well are they with defending against owls and small dogs (I realize that most dedicated roos will, but with what effectiveness?)

I am kinda new to Barred Rock, so I have a question for all of you experts. I have a barred rock/buckeye cross roo who looks just like a normal barred rock with like 3 or 4 reddish hackles. If I breed him with my 4 barred rock females, will they look like barred rocks? I know nothing about genetics so I don't know what to expect of their offspring. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
