Plymouth Rock thread!

Does anyone have any pictures of their Plymouth Rocks are we loosing interest in this breed?
No, still interested; just don't have pictures!

I will try to get some. My blues are coming on 7 months now so they are starting to look good - to me, anyway, LOL.
I'd like to get a critique on my blue cockerel if I can get him up here.

Don't have much experience and I am new to breeding for Plymouth Rock type, but to me he looks pretty nice.

Also, I was wondering about something -- I have a cockerel who has a few tail feathers that seem to be upside-down??

Is that a problem? If I pluck them, will they come in the correct direction?

you got it easy! I have 15 pens and 3-400 birds.
Pens are a pain. I have 10 different feeding and drinking stations (including my pens).

Do all your breeding pens have heated waterers? I just can't afford to buy those waterers for 10 areas. Going to just get little rubber dishes and one big heated waterer for the layers.

NO! my main breeding pens don't have any electricity. my front pens have electricity and we use heat tape of the pipes for the nipples.

when it get really cold here we just take the waterers out at night and put pans of water in the pens. they can break the ice if they want. USUALLY it does not get that cold and not for long periods of time either.

Oh yeah I guess. You have it easy with temps. My water will freeze solid in hours. The geese help keep it unfrozen by using it frequently, but still it is really cold in February here.. Brr... I am getting chills just thinking about it.

I do have a heated tack room to take a break from the cold.. It's where I will keep my early hatched chicks so I can use the EcoGlows :)

it does get below freezing at night here some during the day. it will dip down below zero some. but for the most part it is not a huge problem.....well not for the past 3 winters anyway.

We use our tack room at night to move the frozen waterers into, so hopefully the next morning they are at least mostly unthawed. We try to keep a few extra so we can change them out if need be. Don't want the chickens without water for to long. We currently have 27 to take care of.

When I lived in Wisconsin many years ago I used something like this. It kept the water from freezing . Sometimes I would just empty the water at about 9 pm on my finsal rounds to the barn and lock the birds up in their 4x2 foot roost room. Got down to 20 below. Then in the Am I got up and let them out put water in the metal water container. I had timers coming on at 8 am to heat the heathers and then the timers would go off at about 8:30 pm. Worked good for me on the super cold nights. Some nights did not need to do it and of course as it got closer to spring and warmer weather did not use them at all. It is a must if you live in the Midwest or the North County. They got to have water. Hope this helps you. bob

Want to see one of the finest Poultry Buildings I ever saw. Its like the Holiday Inn Express for Poultry.

First class for the super cold weather. Can be modified for us who may not be as cold but great floor plans non the less. bob
