We learned about the horrible side sprig at the show. Our lovely SPR cockerel has one and is not show worthy and should not ever be bred. He got white quality due to this now I need to rehome him.
Luckily we have another roo who does not have one. But if I keep both we could get them mixed up and breed the girls on accident.

This ones legs are a bit lighter. She did get reserve American class under a Jersey Giant rooster. There was only 5 in the class though.

Was this an APA judge at this 4-h show? If so, I'm surprised that he would have used this female if she has the wrong color legs; under the "cutting for defects" section of the SOP, any leg color other than what is called for in the breed SOP is a DQ.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Silver Penciled male; you should consider eating him - that's the true nature of what poultry was intended for. I know some folks can't bring themselves to do so, but in reality, why rehome him to someone who may make the mistake of breeding him? Just something to ponder. Sounds like you enjoyed the show!

He is an APA judge. I saw he pinned red and white where other shows would be DQ but it was a fun show. The hen that got blue does have lighter legs. The judge told me that the pullet is young yet (6mo) and her leg color may lighten with egg laying or age or if we give corn.
I wish I could eat him. I would feel awefull doing the killing though he is so sweet and I do a guy that takes in unwanted roosters as he loves the crowing and the colors in his yard. I'm gonna ask him. He wouldn't do any breeding.

I do understand on the dispatching; I cannot dispatch birds that I hatch. I do take them to someone who will do it & process them for me. I thought for awhile I might have difficulty eating them, but thankfully, I don't. It pleases me to know they lived a good life, and are now providing sustenance. But, it's not for everyone.

Sounds like a neat show, and that you got some good feedback from the judge. I love to hear about them giving detailed feedback! You can learn SO much from them. Who was the judge?

My daughters three Bt BR from Horstman all got blue quality. The one hen got best SCCL class. we got to talk to the judge who said they are indeed nice and we should breed them. I almost gave away the cockerel due to a damaged comb. He said not to worry and he even gave him blue quality. He said to breed for higher/bigger tails on the cockerels but he is still young. She also used one of the pullets for showmanship and that girl was good and quiet!

My BR rooster that was previously mean then hurt his comb and sturned nice is still nice so far. And his comb is all healed up. He has a strange obession with zippers. He pecks them constantly if there is a jacket with one around. At first I thought it was just because it was shinny, but I showed him a spoon and other various other shinny objects and he couldnt care less. Apparently he just likes zippers. What ever makes him happy I guess. Silly rooster

I have a prankster hen that loves to unzip my jacket!

All my chickens also love buttons. Must be something about the shape.

Well my SPPR are now in their new coop, I still need to put up nesting boxes and roosts. they do however have 4 walls, 3 doors, a roof and a view.

Saturday I am going to lebanon to get a white rock pullet/hen (not sure which) from Doug Akers. The cockerel I got is from him too.
