Hi all, I'm here in the UK. I'll be getting 2 BlackRock chicks at the weekend which i'm looking forward too. Its good to read your comments about the Plymouth Rocks you have as our BlackRocks are a hybrid of the Plymouth/Rhode island Rooster(which you probably already know, so i didn't mean to offend). I've heard some very positive comments about them so fingers crossed they'll be worth having

My little barred rock pullet, Lydia (so made because when she was little it looked like she had on black lipstick lol) is the sweetest little angel!!! We lost her brother Druid, very sadly, when he was only 3 weeks old sacrificing himself for the girls when a cat invaded their run. Broke my heart, and I was afraid Lydia would be depressed but she blossomed and overnight went from being kinda wary of hands to a complete lap chicken. Why is that? Now she loves being held and pet, she walks around singing her little song all the time and she's always the first to try new treats and listens very well to her mommy (me lol). She could not be any sweeter, you look in her little eyes and you can see what a gentle, innocent, curious little soul dwells within and sometimes I can't stand to leave her for the night. I keep my girls (a goofy, sweet guinea hen and Amerecuana both 3+ mos old and little Lydia whose now about 5 weeks) in a temporary brooder/coop made out of a very large wire dog cage in the garage where they are safe but since the cat attack took two of my baby boys, Druid and my guinea Little Foot, I have major PTSD and honestly I'm afraid to ever put them outside. I look at Lydia as I walk in for the night after cleaning their stuff and giving them night night treats and I just want to take her in with me and cuddle her all night, she's so special. Her brother was a sweet little man too, and so brave. Are barred rocks known for being such precious angels? I swear I never thought I would bond so deeply with a chicken, I am partial to guineas, but Lydia has opened my eyes.
She's fearless, too. She investigates very thing new and gets so excited when I dig up squares of grass/weeds/flowers still rooted in the soil to let them "free Range" in the garage.its like she's always smiling when I look at her. All my girls really changed after the boys died, it's like they knew I would miss the boys (who were always the friendly affectionate ones of the bunch) and that I needed my girls to lift me up and they went from standoffish to being super loving literally overnight and it makes me tear up when I think about it. Lydia is the youngest but most confident, she's never shown any kind of aggression or bossy streak this far she's just very content and kinda spoiled in an innocent way, lol. I want more of these birds for sure.
I'm brooding 2 silver sebrights (girl and boy) and a new 5 day old male guinea keet, can't wait to see how my girls like their new pint sized rooster!
