Really? You guys are SOOOo lucky! Our Barred/Plymouth rock is SO mean! We got him about two weeks old, and he likes attacking me, attacking the other chickens, and etc. We're going to get rid of him, he almost killed one of our Mixed Japaneese bantams!

Wow, those are some nice barred there. I have a new picture to post that I took of 2 of my Partridges today. The cockral is Alpha and one hen that I plan on breeding him too this spring. I still have to build the breeding coop add on to the main coop. This picture is right outside my front door, they are debugging the front garden.

Yeah! He sure looks really MEAN! Look at the way he's standing! His position. He's really 'watching' you or lining you up in his sight, waiting for the right moment to strike with his claws and spurs if any!

Can I ask, what colour are the shanks of black/white barred rocks as chicks? They didn't come out bright yellow after hatchings, did they?

My white rock chicks always come out yellow and stay yellow. Some strains depending where you buy them from are not yellow they are a white like a some brands of corn like Silver Queen corn. If you breed from birds that have white legs they chicks will have white legs.

Where did you get your White and Barred Rocks from?

In regards to the rooster that is mean and attacks you. This sounds very normal for many of the chicks that are shiped to peoples homes.

I have only had one chicken spike me and that was eight years ago and he was a white rock bantam male he hit my hand and made it bleed then it got infected. I got rid of him as I did not want this kind of behavior in my strain. I have never had a mean large fowl in 22 years.

Where did you get your mean rooster from?
The rooster in the picture above shows good yellow legs and he is as gentle as a lamb. Not my bird but a friends bird.
Pretty pictures however. bob

sorry I did not know the picture was so large.

Just for sake of argument, regarding this white rock rooster. You made this post on another thread:

The bottom picture is about as close to standard as I have ever seen. This is the angle I try to shoot for.
You don’t want to have a lift that starts at the neck and goes to the end of the tail like a Wyandotte. You also don’t want a super high angle that encroaches to the angle of a Langshang either. bob

Now arent a lot of these pictures, including the above, showing what you are saying that you dont want, which is the lift of the tail starting at the neck and going to the end?

Halo, you are correct in saying the pictures (such as above) are not what you want. A Rock with good type has a good length of back on it before it starts to rise into the tail. The tail itself is only supposed to be 30 degrees above horizontal. A lot of 'winning' rocks have this trait on both the male and female side. The reason, most people don't really know their standard - either judges, or breeders/exhibitors- or they ignore their standard becasue they are winning so why change. A good breeder would breed to the standard regardless of how they are judged. There are a lot of good judges out there, but there are a lot of bad judges out there as well.
