I have two salmon faverolle hens. My son dusted them with poultry dust and he also applied frontline spray with a q-tip because they were infested with lice or mites?? We are VERY NEW to this. They are both now paralyzed. Is there anything we can do? I think he accidentally poisoned them. PLEASE HELP!!!

Oh my goodness this is awful! You can try a body flush. This is to try and flush the toxins out of there body
They are two types of flushes you can do I'll explain both but only pick one
Epsom salt flush 1 teaspoon Epsom salt in one half cup water. Poured or carefully squirted down birds throat twice daily for 2 to3 days being very careful not to aspirate the bird. The second flush I like much better its called the molasses flush and its 1 pint of molasses to 5 gallons of water given for no longer than 8 hours. This is a laxative that will absorb the toxins and remove them from the chickens body. I would use the molasses flush.flush only adult birds never chicks. I got this remedy for poisoning out of my chicken treatment and diagnosis book. I really hope it helps. Once you do the flush the toxins should be removed from the body and give the birds time to recover after that. I hope this is helpful for you and wish you the very best of luck! Keep us posted on how they are doing.

Hello and Thank You for your help. My girls are still not any better. I called our local vet who instructed us to give them a warm soapy bath. We have done this twice. He also called the poison control line for frontline and the doctor there told me that they were not overmedicated and she suggested we worm them. So far we have given them Wazine for round worms, Safeguard wormer, & vitamins and electrolytes in their water. One of the girls is sitting up but she can't stand. The other one is either lying on her side or on her back with her legs in the air. They are both eating, sleeping, and pooping. I am at a Total Loss as to what to do next. These are my sons 4h chickens and our fair is not until Sept. The girls are only 5 months old. I feel as though I've tried everything to no avail. My husband wants me to put them down. They are beautiful, but I don;t want them to suffer. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You!!

I am speechless at the advice you have been given by Frontline poison center, they did realize you meant a chicken, not a child. Worm them after they have become ill, worming is hard enough on them. I am not sure which drug Frontine uses,is it Fipronil? Fipronil is a nervous system disruptor, effective on contact or ingestion,it is moderately toxic to mammals, meaning that it is possible for your chickens to have had a reaction to this. Your vet is correct in advising you on the washing. If drug is Permithrin,it is toxic also, toxicity is seen anywhere from few hours-24 hours. Check package for what drug and the percentage of drug in Frontline. I would stop the wormer until chickens are feeling better. Make sure they are drinking water to prevent kidney damage in the event of toxicity. Wash again to remove as much drug on skin as possible. I would contact vet again if they are not better, and see if you can get a antitoxin.

I'm sorry the flush didn't help! I'd continue to try washing and contact the vet. sometimes it takes some time to run through the system.I say this because I have had a similar experience. I raise Koi fish and my bug man got over spray into my pond.my big beautiful fish instantly curled up into an awful position as if their spine was curled. Each fish is over100$ so iI was not eager to cull them. I gave them some time with fresh water and in about two weeks they in curled back to normal.I know you're not dealing with a fish but its the same neurological response to the poison and I'm hoping it might run through the system and then they start to become normal again.I would at least give it a chance before you cull. I'd also speak to the vet and see if they possibly have a anti toxin they can give. I know fish and chickens are different but if the fish were able to uncurl its possible that the chickens have a chance too.I wish you the best
See what the vet says about a anti toxin. I truly hope they recover!

Thank you realsis and ten chicks. Here's an update. We gave the girls another bath today. One of them (Ziva) is now standing and taking steps. The other one (Zelda) is now laying upright with her legs tucked under her. We are giving them vitamins and electrolytes and I am trying to figure out how to do the molasses flush. Math was never my strong point. Should I put the molasses/water mixture directly into their mouth? This would seem easier and I would be sure they are getting it. Also our local vet has directed me to contact an avian vet, as they are not at all familiar with chickens. The nearest avian vet to me is an hour away. Most of the vets around here (dover, Ohio) treat cats and dogs. There is one horse vet and one livestock vet. They deal primarily with cows, pigs and sheep. I digress. We did the safeguard wormer. Not sure how much they actually had. My son mixed 2 cc's with a cup of water and mixed it in their food. They did eat their food, but this evening I removed it because I don't want it to go bad. I should also let you know that we gave all my chickens corid about 3 weeks ago because one of my other chickens was pooping blood and I didn't want any of my other chickens getting sick. I am so thankful for this siite and glad that there are people willing to help me. All advice is greatly appreciated!!! Thank You:)!!

For the molasses I'd simply add it to the water and let them drink freely for no longer than 8 hours. This should help flush there system
I got this remedy for poison out of my chicken health book so it should flush them internally. That's great they are improving! Hopefully it will run its course and they will improve just as my fish did when they were poisoned. I wish you the best and hope things work out well for them. Please keep us updated on how they are doing! God bless

Let's see...1/5 pint of molasses is about 6 Tbls (since a pint is 32 liquid Tbls).
So 6 Tbls and maybe a 1/4 tsp or molasses to 1 gallon of water, or 1 Tbls and 1 tsp of molasses to 1 pint of water. hth

This is out of my league here, but would it even help now to do the molasses flash since these meds were on the skin, not taken internally, and it is 3 days since it happened? I would be afraid in their weakened state that they would get diarrhea and get dehydrated.

I have no idea about the time frame you have to flush, but since the nervous system was effected in these birds, the drugs definitely went past the fat cells. You are absolutely right that diarrhea will occur with a molasses flush and that's kind of the point. Hopefully it draws as many toxins out as possible and flushes them. You follow it up with lots of clean water with vitamins and electrolytes as well as probiotics and good food.
