Hi there, I have a crested Polish chicken, the name is Lopez. Lopez is almost two months old, and I'm trying to find out the gender of this lovely little thing. The yellow one is Lopez, the other is Georgie who is another Polish. Just for comparison purposes.

We have 3 polish, and 10 other chickens of two different types. Lopez is the only polish who was dealing with head feather problems. By that I mean the non-polish hens were eating Lopez's head feathers! So I kind of though this made him, well, a him. But I don't have experience. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Based on those wild, pointed crest feathers that Lopez is developing, I'd say he is a cockerel. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with Lopez.

The head feathers of a cockerel will be long and pointed - pretty much like the neck feathers. The head feathers of a pullet are blunt, which usually results in a rounded, poofy crest. I like to say the hens have 'fro's, the roo's have dreads. These two are mature birds, but I think you can see what I'm talking about:

Rooster (Diamond):

Hen (Pearl):

I agree with Bunny Lady, males have rock star crests and females have a more rounded, poufy crest - like the old bouffant women's hairdos in the 70's. Whoops dating myself.
